These were women, as the title suggests, largelyincircumstancesof considerabledisadvantage.Theyhadsuffered,and oftenweresuffering,greatstressanddistressintheirlives.Theywere,however, preparedtotalkaboutmatterswhichreferredtothatpain.Somewomenbecame distressed in the interview, and yet were determined to tell their story. One sometimeswondersatthecircumstancesofpeoplewhereittakesresearchersto providetheopportunityforsuchstoriestobetold.Iammostgratefulofallto thesewomen.Ihopethatthisbook,andanyeffectsitmayhave,willdothem justice.Allnameshavebeendeleted,includingthoseof thechildren.
