To understand the bases of aggression it is thus necessary to study phenomena ranging from the motivation of individuals to the complex social processes involved in war. Scientists from backgrounds as different as genetics and human relations have gathered information about the causes and the ways to prevent and control the display of aggression in our society. These interventions have to be diverse in order to deal with all aspects of human beings and society, varying from pharmacological control in individuals to programs of peace to promote respect among people and among nations. This book is the result of research studies presented at the XIV World. Meeting of the International Society for Research on Aggression, held in Valencia, Spain, in July 2000. The main purpose has been to cover the majority of approaches used in research on aggression and violence in which scientists are involved at the present. Special emphasis has been given to interventions to control and prevent aggression that have been proposed at different levels and that are currently being examined. The book starts with chapters that deal with the biology of aggression, including neuroanatomy, neurochemistry, neuroendocrinology, genetics and psychopathology. Following these, a wide range of chapters present information about aggression in children and adolescents in different settings such as family, school and community. Studies on aggression in specific relationships such as marital and sexual, and specific settings such as bars, prisons and traffic provide insight into the diversity and complexity of aggressive behavior. v vi Preface Differences between cultures with respect to aggression, social prejudice, war and programs of peace complete the diversity of approaches used in the study of this behavior. On the other hand, independently of the wide spectrum of aggression and violence displayed in our society, the consequence of this behavior on the victims is always the same: humiliation, pain, alteration in development and health status, and even death. Taking into account that being aggressive does not exclude the possibility of being a victim and vice versa, in this book the impact that aggression has on the victims has also been considered. A small number of representative chapters about victims are included, ranging from the impact of aggression on behavior and physiology in animal models to victims of war. This book is aimed at academics, and professionals of psychology, psychiatry, education, social affairs, and political sciences interested in aggression and violence who wish to widen their view of this disgraceful aspect of human society.
