Reproductive Medicine Borini PreservAtion • Coticchio About the book of HumAn Oocyte cryopreservation entails important potential advantages for human IVF, offering a less ethically disputable alternative to embryo cryopreservation, simplifying and making safer oocyte donation, and giving an opportunity for fertility preservation to women at risk of premature ovarian failure as an effect oocytes of genetic factors or chemo- or radiotherapies. Oocyte cryopreservation could also meet the expectations of women wishing to preserve their fertility for social reasons. In the last few years, advances in cryopreservation methodologies have dramatically improved the efficiency of oocyte cryopreservation, leading to the birth of over a thousand babies and o challenging the supremacy of embryo cryopreservation as the preferred from cryobiology science form of fertility preservation. f This text has been conceived with the aim of offering a comprehensive HP view of the state of the art of oocyte cryopreservation. It covers fundamental ur to Clinical Applications concepts of low temperature storage (controlled rate slow cooling and e m vitrification), aspects of oocyte physiology relevant to the process of s cryopreservation, essential biological and clinical evidence, and ethical Ae implications of oocyte cryopreservation, thereby providing a complete r overview of progress in this strategy in assisted reproduction. n v About the editors oA t o ANDREA BORINI (MD) and GIOVANNI COTICCHIO (BSc, MMedSci, PhD) are, i respectively, the Clinical and Scientific Director and Scientific Supervisor co of the IVF Laboratory of Tecnobios Procreazione, Bologna, Italy. yn t e The immunofluorescence image on the front cover originates from a collaborative work between s Tecnobios Procreazione and Professor David Albertini Y004251 Edited by Andrea Borini Giovanni Coticchio Preservation of Human Oocytes Reproductive Medicine and Assisted Reproductive Techniques Series Series editors David Gardner, University of Melbourne, Australia Jan Gerris, University Hospital Ghent, Belgium Zeev Shoham, Kaplan Hospital, Rehovot, Israel Titles 1.
