Economic impact of sunflower production technologies under all India co-ordinated research project (AICRP) in Karnataka PRAKASH K.N ABSTRACT The present study is designed with the overall objective of assessment of the economic impact and efficiency of sunflower technologies released by AICRP in the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore. All India Coordinated Research Project (AICRP) on sunflower functioning since 1977 has made concerted efforts to address the regional problems by developing production technologies suitable for different states including Karnataka. During the period 1980-2010, the state had registered a positive significant growth of 6.15 percent in area and 5.61 percent in production. However, the productivity growth was non-significant with negative growth rate. Irrigated sunflower in Karnataka, during the period 1990-2010, registered a significant growth both in production (4.61%) and productivity (2.00%). However, the growth rate in area (2.52%) was positive but non-significant. The gross returns as well as net returns were highest in the case of Chikkaballapur at Rs 24600 and Rs 9541, respectively. The ratio of net return per rupee invested in sunflower among sample respondents was highest in Chikkaballapur (0.63) followed by Chikmagalur (0.57) and Chitradurga (0.48). The yield gap in sunflower was 3.40 qtl/ha between potential and average farmers yield in rainfed areas and 10.66 qtl/ha in irrigated condition in Karnataka state. The estimates of TFP for sunflower in the state varied from 1.13 in 1991- 92 to 1.06 in 2010-11. The output growth was highest (2.30) in the year 2007-08. The highest (2.07) input growth was recorded in the year 1994- 95. The IRR for research investment on AICRP centre Bangalore was estimated at 7.87 per cent, which shows that it is a reasonable return to research investment. 2013 B.V.
