Power-Glide Foreign Language Courses 1682 W 820 N, Provo, UT 84601 Part Number: B12209-115 (4/99) "íiiviaN_ “Power-glide delivers what it promises. With this course you won’t be intimidated to teach a foreign language. Every successful lesson learned will motívate you to move on to the next one. People will wonder where your child ‘prepped.’ Using Power-glide will open doors for your children that will carry into adulthood.” Kathy von Duyke, Editor, KONOS Helps “[Power-glide] is miles beyond the traditional text in creativity and interest level, and will be especially useful for a student who does not do well with traditional texts. I sus- pect that it will work best for students who are motivated to learn the language and will put in the effort necessary to become fluent rather than just going through the motions and completing the mínimum requirements.” Cathy Duffy, Author, Christian Home Educators’ Curriculum Manual “Unlike other higher-priced courses, the approach does not contain repetitive drills, is not strictly hearsay, and does not promise subliminal learning. It is fast-paced and takes full concentration. The use of the full-sized textbook included with the tapes makes it a more comprehensive course than others with twice the number of the tapes.” Arme Brodbeck, Reviewer for Mary Pride’s Practical Homeschhooling “As one who designs educational programs for individual students in our school, I must tell you how impressed I have been with the Power-glide material. I was able to exam¬ ine the second year course material for our community college. Your course is more comprehensive! ” Linda Rittner, Director, Pleasant Hill Academy lll What makes a Power-glide language course unique? Our course is developed by linguists, not marketing strategists. Many com- mercial language companies promise a super shortcut. They put together a selection of useful words, phrases, and dialogues that simúlate situations a tourist might face. They have you listen to natives deliver the lines and repeat what they say. And that’s it. However, such little scraps aren’t enough to get to the core of a language, to develop a strong sense of how it works and feels, and to build the habits, skills, and strategies that make efficient learn- ing possible. This Power-glide language course gives you real language learn- ing—the kind where you actually internalize the language and begin to use it as your own. And with the capability you will have after completing the course, you can readily acquire the special language you need for business or other purposes. Dr. Robert Blair, Ph.D. in linguistics, is the developer of Power-glide Languages Gourses. His methods are informed by current language acquisi- tion theory and rooted in the work of world-renowned language teaching innovators. These pioneers created holistic, nonlinear models focused on the learner, the learning process, and natural acquisition strategies. Dr. Blair has adapted their contributions to his own Creative work to make superb lan¬ guage courses. This course is íun and engaging because it gives rich experience in communi- cation; it does not rely on mazes of grammar rules, rote memorization, and mind-numbing drills. Instead, you’ll find: • Music • Stories • Memory aids • Diglot-weave narratives • You-are-there adventures • Kinesthetic, visual, and audio activities • Pictographs Philosophy Power-glide courses cover grammar without emphasizing it. Our approach lets you gradually soak up the language. The course has exercises designed to help you discover the grammar for yourself. You will learn grammar by listen- Introduction ing to and seeing the language, much like small children do. You have two main objectives: understanding, and speaking & writing. It’s critical that you follow the learning methods. How to Use this Course • Recognize the tape on and tape off symbols • Understand the text. • Say it and write it. The tape on and tape off symbols: Tape on = Tape off = To understand, you should: 1. Look over the material and compare the Spanish to the English. 2. Listen to the tape while following the written text. 3. Listen to the tape a couple of times without looking at the written text. 4. Don’t be shy. Use the pause button to stop the tape for a moment if you want a bit more time. To say it, do this: 1. Read the story or material out loud in chorus with the tape, and keep the meaning in mind. 2. Tura the tape off, read each Spanish sentence out loud, and then look away and say it. Think of the meaning. 3. Now cover up the Spanish, look at the first English sentence, and try to say it in Spanish. Gheck to see if you did it right. Do that for all of the sen- tences. 4. Play the recording of the text, but pause the tape after each English sen¬ tence and say the Spanish. 5. Using notes of key words only, try to say the Spanish sentences the best you can. 6. To write it, do the same as above, but write your sentences instead of speaking them. CD-ROM supplementary activities: This symbol indicates that a supplementary activity is available on CD-ROM. General Tips 1. Use the course daily. Ten minutes per day is far better than an hour once a week. Sporadic use leads to lower retention and motivation. You may forget previous material, have diíficulty developing crucial habits, and eventually become frustrated. 2. Follow the instructions carefully. Use the advice given in the How To Use this Course. It will result in greater understanding, faster learning, and better retention of the material. 3. Pause and review as needed. Although it’s not necessary to know every- thing períectly before moving on, it’s also unnecessary to hurry through the course. Take some time to review, and play and replay the audio tapes as often as needed. The more exposure to the target language, the better. V As you know, English is spoken in various accents in different regions of the world. There is no universal “standard” form. Several better known dialects inelude British English, Scottish English, Australian English, South African English, and “southern” American English. These different forms of English are spoken by a variety of educated people in many parts of the world, but these diverse people learn to understand English speakers whose accent or dialect is quite different from their own speech. So diverse are the accents and forms of English in different parts of the world that linguists now speak of Englishes. Not only do accents differ in different regions, but usage, idiom, slang, and grammar differ as well. “Cheerio” may be a common parting word in some parts of the English speaking world, but it is almost never heard in other parts. Spanish, too, is spoken in various accents. There is no universal “standard” form. Educated citizens of Madrid may not speak like educated Spanish speakers in México, Argentina, Cuba, or any other Spanish speaking country in the world, but they learn to understand Spanish speakers whose accent or dialect is quite different from their own speech. So diverse are the accents and forms of Spanish in different parts of the world that linguists now speak of Spanishes just as they speak of Englishes. Usage, idiom, slang, and gram¬ mar differ from one región to another just as accents vary. “Adiós” may be a common parting word in some parts of the Spanish speaking world but may be almost never heard in other parts. The Spanish you will hear on these cassettes is not limited to just one voice or región. Hearing the variety of Spanish accents on the tape, you will not only find “your own voice”—your own preferred accent—but you will accus- tom your ear to hearing and understanding Spanish as it is spoken in its many forms. Some might suggest that a translation they find is not as accurate or idiomat- ic as it could be. In reality, there are many possible translations for sentence- length pieces. Certain translations would come closer to Mexican Spanish than to Iberian Spanish (of the Madrid variety). Word-for-word translation often is not the best. What is an idiom for some Spanish speakers is not the same for others. If an American told a learner of English who hears “cheerio” on a tape that that parting is not used, he or she would be right according to American usage but wrong according to British usage. So it is with the Power-glide Spanish course; a word or phrase that may not be current in one región does not mean it is not current in another. You will not be exposed to Spanish of one región only. You will be exposed to varieties spoken in different regions of the world. You will be learning International Spanish.
