I know you’re reading this in February but as we celebrate the birth of the Prince of Peace, it’s a time to reflect on a bountiful past and on the beauty that lies ahead. Murat Band experienced a great and notable year under the capable leadership of its 2009 officers and now as we enter the new millennium (millen- nium – “any period of great happiness, peace, pros- perity, etc.”), organizations elect new leadership to enhance, build, preserve and challenge the uncer- tain future. We would be a race of couch potatoes. Anticipation would be non-existent and without the unknown, there would be no need for “stop” and “go” signs; everything would be on “caution.” Clubs and fraternal organizations of yesteryear experience declining member- ship, and I used to think our number one priority was new members. Now I’m not sure. Although it ranks near the top, I believe even more important is communica- tion. If current and abandoned members don’t know what’s going on and are ignored, how can you encourage prospective members to show any interest or enthusiasm? Bear in mind there is a world of information and experience from past Recorder’s performers available to the neophyte.
