No other format, including the photograph, the book, the magazine, or the postage stamp, has depicted 20th-century nursing with such scope and diversity. The postcards in this book date from 1893 to 2002. Many are taken from the period of 1907 through World War I, known as the Golden Age of postcards. During that time, according to International Postal Union figures, approximately 140 billion postcards were mailed worldwide. Great as it is, that number represents only a fraction of the total production because vast numbers of postcards were kept or exchanged without mailing. During the same period, in both the United States and in Europe, the industrial revolution had created dire conditions. Immigrants' rush to the cities, and the subsequent widespread unsanitary living conditions, had resulted in epidemic-level diseases. Machines at factories, construction sites, farms, and mines were complex, had fast-moving parts or operated under pressure, and were often unstable. Corrosive and flammable chemicals created their own hazards. Labor laws were few, and safety measures were primitive at best. The situation created a desperate need for health care reform. Thousands of nurses were needed to work with the increasing numbers of patients in both urban and rural settings. Then came World War I, creating an emergent need for thousands more to staff the hospitals in Europe (while not depleting the number of nurses available at home). Finally, coinciding with the peak of the major Allied offensive, the 1918 flu pandemic struck, killing tens of millions of victims worldwide, putting a further strain on health care resources. The critical need for nurses, then, overlapped with the Golden Age of postcards. Postcards reflected and, in turn, fueled the public's awareness of the importance of the nurse. This book is offered as a tribute to all nurses—past, present and future. Filled with images of rare and beautiful postcards, it is primarily an art book. It documents not the history of nursing per se, but rather nursing's relationship to the significant forces in 20th-century society and culture. I hope that, in addition to finding the social history informative and interesting, you are refreshed by the therapeutic quality of the images themselves. And, for those of you who are not nurses, I hope that you become inspired to investigate nursing as a career path. Nursing is experiencing the most critical shortage in its history. Literally hundreds of thousands of additional nurses are needed now, and the need grows daily. There is no better profession, and we most certainly can use your help. Although there are many ways to approach this book, I want to tell you what I had in mind when I designed it. The idea was for the reader to approach each chapter as if it were a museum or gallery exhibit, each double-page spread representing one wall. If you wish, you can read the introduction to each exhibit (chapter) or simply walk right in and wander around, so to speak. Whenever you come to an image about which you would like to know more, the notes are available. The notes are intended to be unpredictable; that is, they are not uniform in degree of detail and may not even relate to nursing, though each note does relate directly, in some way, to the postcard. For those who prefer a more guided tour, the postcards do follow a sequence based P.xii mostly on chronology and geography, but visual compatibility was the prime consideration in placement. I hope you'll enjoy perusing this book as much as I enjoyed putting it together. Michael Zwerdling, R.N.
