Preface
This report has been published as a useful reference for understanding population trends and related
issues in Japan. It is a compilation of statistical data on the population of Japan from various sources.
The National Institute of Population and Social Security Research has made every effort to collect
various reports and documents on demographic statistics of Japan as well as on a worldwide basis. The
institute has also published a variety of sophisticated demographic indicators, calculated by its research
staff based on raw data. Latest Demographic Statistics (in Japanese) has been issued every year since
1982, and the 2008 edition was published in January as Vol. 25. This is an English version of the
Japanese original (2008 edition). For the sake of brevity, this version does not include the breakdown
of statistics by prefecture and international statistics that appear in the Japanese original version.
Therefore, this report covers only the latest standard statistics for the population of Japan as a whole. It
also includes graphs of some of the main statistics for convenience. We hope that this report will be
used extensively by a wide range of individuals, not only those in Japan but also those around the
world who have an interest in the population of Japan.

Introduction for Users
1. This statistical report covers basic statistics on population released by each statistical organization, and
comprises data with relatively simple processing such as the calculation of rate, ratio and percentage. Some,
however, are given a slightly high degree of processing, for example, in the calculation of stable population
structure and the analysis of the contribution of the decrease of age-specific mortality rate to life expectancy.

limitations. If more details are needed, refer to the original documents shown there.
