POPULATION INDEX CUMULATIVE INDEX TO VOLUME 59 1993 OFFICE OF POPULATION RESEARCH, PRINCETON UNIVERSITY POPULATION ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA, INC. US ISSN 0032-4701 ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Many people contribute to Population Index by preparing citations for the Bibliography, by translating and abstracting population literature in foreign languages, and by assisting with artwork, computing, typing, proofreading, and numerous other tasks. The Index wishes to thank them all for their help. We owe a particular debt to the staff of the several Princeton University libraries who help us in our preparation of the Bibliography. We would especially like to thank Thomas Holzmann, Maryann Belanger, and Michiko Nakayama of the library of the Office of Population Research, and many others at OPR, particularly Wayne Appleton for assistance with computer-related problems. We also acknowledge the efficient secretarial help provided by Lynn Mendenko and Sandra Binkley, the data entry done by Carol Dyer, the clerical help provided by our work-study students Marcin Sawicki and Martha Wallace, and summer help by Maya Smith. We would also like to thank those outside Princeton who have helped us with queries and problems related to the Bibliography over the past year: in particular, the New York Public Library; Neil Zimmerman of the Population Council Library in New York; the Joint Bank-Fund Library in Washington; David Foster of the Encyclopaedia Britannica Statistical Library; Mette Shayne of Northwestern University Library; David Rozkuszka of Stanford University Libraries; the U.S. National Library of Medicine; Grace Barnas of the International Statistical Programs Center at the U.S. Bureau of the Census; Gera Draaijer of the University of Texas Population Research Center; Phyllis Tabusa of the East-West Population Institute in Hawaii; the staff of DOCPAL at the UN Centro Latinoamericano de Demografia in Santiago; Mme. Hauchecorne and her colleagues at the INED Library in Paris; and many members of the Association for Population/Family Planning Libraries and Information Centers--International (APLIC), particularly those who are partners in APLIC’s Census Network. Finally, we acknowledge with gratitude the support we continue to receive from the U.S. National Institute of Child Health and Human Development under Contract No. N01-HD-2-3146 for gathering and editing the bibliographic data appearing in Population Index, and from the U.S. Agency for International Development through the Population Information Program of Johns Hopkins University for assistance with preparing the citations in machine-readable form for inclusion in the POPLINE data base at the U.S. National Library of Medicine. Machine-Readable Data Files (MRDF) 149, 322, 522, 693 NOTES ON SOURCES The following list represents the sources from which the citations in Population Index are compiled. It includes both primary sources, such as journals and other serial publications, and secondary sources (indicated by *) reviewed by the editors on a regular basis for items of interest. This source list is intended as a reference tool for librarians and others wanting an introduction to the universe of serial publications concerned with demography and population studies. The publications in this list have been selected by the editors of Population Index for inclusion because they regularly contain items of interest to demographers. The list excludes journals and other serial publications that only occasionally include items of demographic interest, although many of these are also reviewed by the editors on a regular basis. Many journals covering medical, biological, and geographical literature are not represented in this list since the principal bibliographies for each discipline are reviewed regularly in order to identify, obtain, and cite items of demographic relevance. Library of Congress proofsheets serve as another important secondary source of material for bibliographic citations. Routine official statistical publications that do not contain substantive articles are cited in the checklist of Governmental and International Serial Publications Containing Vital Statistics, issued periodically as a special bibliography--see Population Index, Vol. 53, No. 4, Winter 1987. The sources listed are examined annually and additions or deletions made as appropriate. All sources are listed alphabetically by title, followed by the title of the issuing agency, the International Standard Serial Number (ISSN), and the address to which correspondence should be directed. Cross-references are given for official publications of governmental and intergovernmental agencies and for titles in more than one language. Items that have been added to the source list since the previous annual index are identified here by the symbol f. The editors welcome exchanges with institutions, information on new or overlooked publications or bibliographies, and other correspondence that will improve and refine this bibliography. * Secondary sources t Items added in 1993 A Advance Data from Vital and Health Statistics of the National Center for Health Statistics.
