Popular Sovereignty in Historical Perspective This collaborative volume offers the first historical reconstruction of theconceptofpopularsovereigntyfromantiquitytothetwentiethcen- tury.Firstformulatedbetweenthelatesixteenthandmid-seventeenth centuries, the various early modern conceptions of the doctrine were heavilyindebtedtoRomanreflectiononformsofgovernmentandAthe- nian ideas of popular power. This study, edited by Richard Bourke and Quentin Skinner, traces successive transformations of the doc- trine, rather than narrating a linear development. It examines criti- cal moments in the career of popular sovereignty, spanning antiquity, medievalEurope, theearlymodernwarsofreligion, therevolutionsof the eighteenth century and their aftermath, decolonisation and mass democracy.Featuringoriginalworkbyaninternationalteamofschol- ars, thebookoffersareconsiderationofoneoftheformativeprinciples of contemporary politics by exploring its descent from classical city- statestotheadventofthemodernstate. richard bourke is Professor in the History of Political Thought and co-director of the Centre for the Study of the History of Political ThoughtatQueenMaryUniversityofLondon.HisbooksincludePeace inIreland:TheWarofIdeas(2003,2012)andEmpireandRevolution:The PoliticalLifeofEdmundBurke(2015). quentin skinner isBarberBeaumontProfessoroftheHumanities atQueenMaryUniversityofLondon.HisbooksincludeTheFounda- tionsofModernPoliticalThought(2vols.,1978),ReasonandRhetoricin thePhilosophyofHobbes(1996),LibertybeforeLiberalism(1998),Hobbes andRepublicanLiberty(2008),ForensicShakespeare(2014)andathree- volumecollectionofessays,VisionsofPolitics(2002).
