A major theme of her work for the last 20+ years has been user involvement and user movements, public participation, citizenship and new forms of democratic practice. Her books include: P ower, Participation and Political Renewal (2007) (with Janet Newman and Helen Sullivan); and Subversive Citizens: Power, Agency and Resistance in Public Services (2009) (with David Prior), both Policy Press. Michael C unningham is Senior Lecturer in Politics at the University of Wolverhampton, United Kingdom. His principal research interests are Northern Irish politics on which he has published widely including British Government Policy in Northern Ireland 1969–2000 (Manchester University Press, 2001) and, more recently, the politics of apology on which he has published several articles. Tim D artington is a researcher and social analyst in health and social care and associate at The Tavistock Institute in London and the Tavistock & Portman NHS Trust. He is a member of Organisation for Promoting Understanding of Society (OPUS) and of the International Society for the Psycho-Analytic Study of Organizations (ISPSO). He is the author of M anaging Vulnerability, the Underlying Dynamics of Systems of Care (Karnac Books, 2010). Deborah B. Gould was involved in ACT UP for many years as well as the Chicago activist group, Queer to the Left, and is a founding member of the art/activism/research collaborative group, Feel Tank Chicago. She is an Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Her scholarly interests are in contentious politics and political emotion. Her book M oving Politics: Emotion and ACT UP’s Fight against AIDS was pub- lished by the University of Chicago Press in 2009. Paul H oggett is Professor of Social Policy at the University of the West of England and a psychoanalytic psychotherapist. He is the author of several books in social policy but also has a long-standing interest in understanding public life from a nonrationalist perspective.
