Abbreviations Vatican II Documents Preface Any talk about the Spirit of God in the contemporary world, in my opinion, should be guided by two overarching principles. On the one hand, pneumatological discourse can be meaningful only insofar as it takes into account the diverse and rich variety of approaches to the experience of the Spirit ecumenically. No church can claim a monopoly on the Spirit, and no tradition is a specifically “spirited” one. Only by carefully listening to and learning from the various, often even conflicting, testimonies concerning the Spirit can we come to any kind of comprehensive understanding. On the other hand, talk about the Spirit must always be contextual and therefore culture specific. The Spirit of God is no general spirit hovering above the cosmos but a Person of the Triune God who indwells believers and creation in specific and tangible ways. Listening to the voices from places once considered the margins of Christian theology, such as the voices of women, or liberationists, or Green theologians, sensitizes us to the necessary pluralism of pneumatologies. Attention to the emerging voices of the Third World provides correctives to classical theology, not only because the growth of the Christian church is taking place outside the West but also because the vivid spiritual life of these voices is a greenhouse of new insights into old doctrines. While it is left to the reader to assess to what extent these two guiding principles have been followed in the present text, it is only appropriate for me to reveal what my intentions have been. Living as we are amidst a pneumatological renaissance, books on the Spirit abound, and rightly so. Theology, which simply means reflection on the spiritual life and experience, usually develops by responding to themes that are acutely felt in the church and society. Most books on pneumatology, especially those that are by nature textbooks, tend to be topical, discussing various aspects of pneumatology. The approach of the present book is different and complementary. Rather than focusing on any single topic, the aim is to chart the various territories of writings and reflections in the area of pneumatology. Consequently, we will look at various theological and denominational approaches to the understanding
