Explore the ‘psychogeography’ of old Paris, traveling from the Opéra to Place d’Italie and examine the city captured by Charles Marville at the time of the P Haussmann reconfi gurations. Original nineteenth-century images are juxtaposed with recent photographs taken by Peter Sramek, who visits the sites of i e Marville’s photographs with a large format camera, discovering a changing urban landscape and refl ecting on attitudes towards the city. Th e concept of the r city as a psychological, social and political construct is examined through a number of essays, along with consideration of rephotography as a method of c i photographic documentation. Read too how today’s Parisians feel about their city and, with the addition of historical maps and photographs by Eugène n Atget which record the same sites in the early 1900s, delve into the complex web of development that underlies the surface of modern-day Paris. g T ‘My interest lies partly in the history of cities themselves, but more than that, in how cities come i m to embody cultural history and represent the cultural past in people’s imaginations.’ Peter Sramek e : Peter Sramek has been a photographic artist and educator for over forty years. His work has focused on the cultural signifi cance of historical and touristic sites, currently with an emphasis on the representation of cities. He is a Canadian, though much of his work has been made in Europe: France, Czech Republic, P a Italy and Germany. He specializes in black and white, fi lm-based and panoramic photography. r i s A f t e r Piercing Time: M a r v Paris After i l l e a n Marville d A t g and Atget e t 1 8 6 5 - 2 1865-2012 0 1 2 Sramek Peter Sramek with essays by Min Kyung Lee and Shalini Le Gall intellect | www.intellectbooks.com Piercing Time Final SB Cover_Aug 7 corrections.indd 1 13-08-07 11:44 PM PiercingTime v175 - Aug20 - figure corr.indd 2 13-08-20 3:23 PM 1865 1907 2009 PiercingTime v175 - Aug20 - figure corr.indd 1 13-08-20 3:23 PM PiercingTime v175 - Aug20 - figure corr.indd 2 13-08-20 3:23 PM Piercing Time: Paris After Marville and Atget 1865-2012 Intellect Bristol, UK / Chicago, USA PiercingTime v175 - Aug20 - figure corr.indd 1 13-08-20 3:23 PM PiercingTime v175 - Aug20 - figure corr.indd 2 13-08-20 3:23 PM Piercing Time: Paris After Marville and Atget 1865-2012 Peter Sramek with essays by Min Kyung Lee and Shalini Le Gall PiercingTime v175 - Aug20 - figure corr.indd 3 13-08-20 3:24 PM Piercing Time: Paris After Marville and Atget 1865-2012 First published in the UK in 2013 by Intellect, The Mill, Parnall Road, Fishponds, Bristol, BS16 3JG, UK First published in the USA in 2013 by Intellect, The University of Chicago Press, 1427 E. 60th Street, Chicago, IL 60637, USA Copyright © 2013 Intellect Ltd Contemporary photographs © 2013 Peter Sramek Historical photographs licenced from their respective institutions and agents All texts copyright of the respective authors All rights reserved.
