Joliot Curie International House of Scientists, Varna, Bulgaria, October 7-14. This international event was made possible by the financial support afforded by the International Union of Biochemistry through Doctor P.N. Campbell, the International Union of Pure and Applied Biophysics through Doctor R.D. Keynes, UNESCO, and the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. The characteristic and stimulating feature of the Colloquium'74-PCITRRA was the interdisciplinary audience (physicists, biologists, physicians, chemists, mathema ticians, engineers) and the orientation to information transfer and biological recognition in ageing. The at tention was focused on receptor transformation, espe cially that in ageing. Of special interest were the mathematical models and the theoretical basis of bio-information transfer, the age changes of the receptor recognition, the chemi cal information transfer in development, the hormone hormone interaction envisaged in their biophysical and biochemical aspects. The Colloquium '74 provided a very frank, critical and stimulating atmosphere for work and discussion on the latest results and concepts in topics of interest. The active role of the chairmen, Doctors. H.R. Arnstein, H.-J. Bartels, M. Blecher, J.A. Edwardson, M.R.P. Hall, E.V. Jensen, B.B. Saxena, J.R. Tata, and Ya.M. Varshavsky, was a great contribution in this respect and we would like to express our gratitude to them. v PREFACE We would also like to pay tribute to our corres pondent consultants, Doctors F. Lipmann, B. Chance, V.A. Engelhart, and V.T. Ivanov, for their support and useful advice. The Organizing Committee is indebted to Mr. C. Milushev for the technical organization of this publi cation and the correction of part of the English wording of some of the papers. We extend our thanks to the members of the Orga nizing Committee, the individual participants at the Colloquium '74-PCITRRA for their cooperation, and to Plenum Publishing Corporation Limited for their interest and for the realization of this book. Since the photo-offset mode of production was adopted to ensure the rapidity of the publication, the Editor has of necessity transferred the entire responsi bility for the scientific contents, formation, and style of the various manuscripts to the individual authors. Only in rare cases could corrections be made. For tech nical reasons and space limitations, the discussions will not be published. Some of the papers have not been submitted because of previous publication engagements. The successful end of the Colloquium '74-PCITRRA resulted in the formation of an international advisory body which will act as a Colloquia Committee. Its mem bers are Professor H.R.V. Arnstein, Professor M.R.P. Hall, Professor E.V. Jensen, Professor B.B. Saxena, Dr. J.R. Tata, and Dr. J.G. Vassileva-Popova, chairman.
