Where Tibetan words do appear, they have been rendered in a phonetic version, rather than the more taxing transliterated form. I have generally given the Tibetan terms for areas such as Kham and Amdo (rather than Sichuan and Qinghai, as they are now designated in the People’s Republic of China) although the shape of contemporary borders does not directly match the historic Tibetan ones. When writing about India before 1947, I have retained the names of places like Calcutta (now Kolkata) and Bombay (now Mumbai) as they appeared in the original British sources I consulted.
