I want to thank my beautiful wife and best friend, Kathy. She’s always believed in me (usually more than I believed in myself), encouraged me, and consoled me. Most of all, she’s loved me for 25 years—even when I’m cranky. My children, Ken and Erin, are out of the house now, but they still inspire me and make me proud to be their father. Both of you grew up to be fine adults and I love you. Finally, I’d like to dedicate this to my other best friend, Bo. Bo was my constant com- panion and could always be found curled under my desk while I wrote. Part way through this book, we lost Bo to cancer. I miss him every day, and I hope that when my time comes, he’ll be there waiting for me with his tennis ball, asking “What took you so long?” My co-author, Tim Grey, deserves special thanks for taking a chance with the new guy and agreeing to help write this book. His advice and experience made this project come together, and his experience and talent made it possible. Peter Burian is a fine author, friend, and mentor who coached my early attempts at writing, and I’m grateful for his support and help. Charlotte Lowrie is another fine author and friend, and she is responsible for my first published articles. The opportunity and experience she provided helped lead to this book. I also want to thank all the fine photographers who allowed us to use images from their websites, including John Shaw, Art Wolfe, Debbie Ferrell, Ellen Anon, Charlotte Lowrie, John Paul Caponigro, Mahesh Thapa, Fred Miranda, and Phil Askey. 4348c00.qxd 7/25/04 4:47 PM Page iv Thomas Frizelle and Jay Kelbley at Kodak, Heather Hollaender at Macromedia, Amanda Sahliyeh at Photodex, Kathy Stuparyk at ACD Systems, and Joy Remuzzi at iView Multimedia all provided assistance and encouragement that were invaluable to the project. I also want to thank everyone at Sybex who shepherded me through this book. This was my first book, and a learning experience with patient teachers. I hope we have the opportunity to work together again. A special thanks goes to acquisitions editor Bonnie Bills for giving a rookie the chance to take a concept and turn it into a reality. Thanks also go to developmental editors Jim Compton and Peter Gaughan, production editor Leslie Light, technical editor Ellen Anon, copy- editor Kathy Grider-Carlyle, compositor Maureen Forys and the rest of the staff at Happenstance Type-O-Rama, illustrator Tony Jonick, proofreaders Nancy Riddiough and Laurie O’Connell, and Thom Dyson for his assistance with the companion website. Tim Grey As I take on more and more projects doing the work that I absolutely love, my wonderful wife Lisa continues to be understanding about the demands placed on me by writing deadlines and keeps me focused on maintaining balance. I’m a lucky man to be married to my best friend, who iv is also a loving and supportive wife. ■ TS I’d also like to thank Miranda and Riley for the pride with which they fill me. My good N E friend Bruce Heller also continues to inspire me in writing and in life. I also appreciate Jeff Greene M G for his friendship, great images, and service as a sounding board on many ideas. D E L A special thanks also goes out to Marianne Wallace. She’s been a major supporter from W O day one, and I value her friendship. She had to know I wouldn’t forget to mention her this time! N K C Check out her website at www.ezpixels.com. A For the support and assistance they provided for this project, I’d also like to thank Dave Metz at Canon USA; Dan Steinhardt at Epson; Jan Lederman, Mark Rezzonico, and Lorenzo Gasparini at MAC Group US; Brian Levey at ColorVision; and Marc Pawliger at Adobe. Thanks also to the photographers who continue to inspire me with their awesome talent, including Dewitt Jones, John Shaw, Art Morris, Art Wolfe, and George Lepp, as well as two excellent photographers I’ve recently become acquainted with, Teru Kuwayama and Matthew Jordan Smith. 4348c00.qxd 7/25/04 4:47 PM Page v Dear Reader, Thank you for choosing Photo Finish. This book is part of the growing library of Sybex graphics books, all written by outstanding authors—artists and teachers who really know their stuff and have a clear vision of the audience they’re writing for. Just as it was with film, a digital picture isn’t “finished” until it’s printed and displayed. And it’s that second part—the printing and display—that has a lot of would-be digital photographers refusing to come down from the familiar hills of film photography. In fact, a recent survey shows that more than 50 percent of professional photographers are still shooting film. Doubtless they’ve heard that digital can be not only expensive but also difficult. The knowledge and skills required for implementing a day-to-day color workflow, getting reliable output (whether printed or as a digital slideshow) and, of course, designing, publishing, and maintaining a website can feel intimidating. They seem to require that today’s photographer not only pack around the latest and greatest digital SLR or digital pro back, but that he or she also wear the proverbial white plastic shirt-pocket protector to indicate his or her mastery of computer skills as well. Digital photography shouldn’t be this hard. And, if it must be this hard, then there should be a clear path through the maze of technology and product choices to the finished photo. That’s what Photo Finishprovides: A guide through bewildering terms, options, and technology to the final display, whether it is print, a slideshow, or the Web. What better guides than Jon Canfield and Tim Grey to lead the way? Jon Canfield is an experienced and respected photographer and columnist with a solid background in digital photography. Teaming up with Jon is Tim Grey, who is not only a prolific and highly readable author, but also a respected instructor in all things related to digital input and output at the Lepp Institute in California. With a clear and easy writing style, both Jon and Tim provide welcome voices of experience for both new and seasoned digital photographers. Together, Jon and Tim demystify the second part of digital photography—from color management through printing, website display, and slideshow presentation. I’m sure you’ll enjoy, as I did, having experts to guide you to a photo finish. CHARLOTTEK. LOWRIE Managing editor, MSN Photos (http://photos.msn.com).
