ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The hard work of many historians paved the road for me. For their years of scholarship on Mathew Brady and Civil War photography, I tip my hat to Mary Panzer and William A. Frassanito. For Civil War history, I think none can beat Bruce Catton for readability and humanity. The many scholars who have labored to edit and compile diaries and letters have done all of us an invaluable service, giving us the voices of the men and women who fought in and witnessed the Civil War, and to them I owe many thanks. Thank you also to my patient editor, Julia Richardson, for trusting me. Lastly, my friend Emma Dodge Hanson has taught me that in photography, it's all about the frame: what you leave in, and what you leave out. AUTHOR'S NOTE With this report of the Civil War I have focused almost exclusively on the struggle as it played out in Virginia and the East, and on the activities of the Union Army of the Potomac, President Lincoln, and the photographers based in New York City and Washington. It is by no means a complete picture, and is possibly unbalanced, but every photographer has to leave something outside the frame. I have also taken, without apology, the side of the Union.
