New York 1959-60 PREFACE I welcomed the kind invitation from Mrs Eileen Turner to choose a number of studies from my bibliography that she wished to reprint in the Varion1m Reprints Series of Collected Studies, which has already rendered valuable service to Byzantine scholarship. I chose twenty-two studies which in many ways complete my major works on the Photian Schism and on the history of the Eastern Churches, but excluded those dealing with these problems because they are to be found in more complete fonn in my major works" I have not found it necessary to make any changes in my findings in this selection. Some of the papers not only correct but allay the apprehensions of several of my critics" The study on "National Churches and the Church Universal" (1944) renects the debates l held with both Anglican and Catholic clergy in London during the war and in the post-war period. A few of the ideas we discussed in an oecumenical sp1rit were echoed favorably in some of the sessions of the Second Vatican Council. Although all the hopes expressed in this short essay have not been fulfilled, I have left it unchanged as homage to the clergy of the Church of England who shared them with me. I have limited my choice to studies which are not easily accessible to scholars, and have omitted others including the study on "Constantinople and Rome", which was published in The Cambridge Medieval History ( 1966), and which are readily available.
