In par 5 : ticular, it puts together perspectives that have been largely neglected as valid 6 1 normative ways to address the political and moral questions that arise from t a the coexistence of different cultures in the same geographical space. In this ] o initial introduction, we intend to contextualise the debate of multicultur g e alism in contemporary political theory and locate this volume within the i D debate. In the 21st y b century, societies remain culturally diverse, with most countries having a d mixture of individuals from different races, linguistic backgrounds, religious e d affiliations and so forth. Contemporary political theorists have labeled the a o phenomenon of different cultures existing in the same geographical space, l n w ‘multiculturalism’. That is, one of the meanings of multiculturalism is the o coexistence of different cultures. In particular, this is the meaning that is D used for the term ‘multiculturalism’ in this book.1 When the term ‘multiculturalism’ is used in this sense, i.e., to describe a condition of society where a variety of different cultures coexist, it can mean many things. That is, there are a variety of ways whereby socie ties can be diverse, for example, culture can come in many different forms (Gurr 1993: 3). Perhaps the chief ways in which a country can be culturally diverse is through different religious groups, different linguistic groups,
