PHILIPS’ CHAMBER COMMERCE OF ATLAS A GRAPHIC SURVEY OF THE WORLD’S TRADE WITH A COMMERCIAL COMPENDIUM AND GAZETTEER INDEX GEORGE PHILIP & SON, Ltd., LONDON; THE LONDON GEOGRAPHICAL INSTITUTE, 32 FLEET STREET, E.C, LIVERPOOL; PHILIP, SON & NEPHEW. LTD., SOUTH CASTLE STREET. NEW YORK: C. S. HAMMOND & CO. 1912 . (All Rights Resewed.) ey PREFACE The CHAMP>E1\ of commerce atlas is an attempt to present in a grapliic and at the same time handy and inexpensive form an exhaustive summary of the present economic conditions of tlie Globe. It forms an epitome of commercial information derived from the latest and most authoritative British and Foreign sources, including Blue-books, Trade and Consular Returns, Steamship and Railway Companies’ Time-tables, which are otherwise only available at a prohibitive cost and after endless research. For the first time this widely scattered information, summarised and treated on a comparative method, is gathered together within the compass of a single volume, and by its convenient size and low price placed within the reach of all interested in the present economic condition of the World, the commercial rivalry and enterprises of the sevei'al nations, and the human and practical a.spects of Geography. The scope of the Atlas is best e.xplained by a short reference to the various sections of which it is composed. The first si.x sections of ie8 pages of coloured maps illustrate every aspect of commercial enterprise throughout the World. Every care has been taken to express the necessary detail embodied on the maps in the clearest and most graphic manner and, as far ; as possible, all the information relating to a country, whether cartographical, diagrammatic or statistical is shown at one opening, thus avoiding the in- convenience of cross references and of search elsewhere. The more important Commercial and Economic aspects of geography are depicted in a series of General Maps of the World. The series includes such subjects of general interest as Charts illustrating Commercial Highways by land and sea. Telegraphic and Postal Maps, the Commercial Development of the World, Emigration, Tropical Diseases and their Effects on Commerce, and maps dealing with Commercial Languages, Currencies, and Tariffs. The Sources of Supply of the principal commodities and the direction of their export are shown in a separate series of maps, accompanied by coloured diagrams showing the amount of their production and consumption, and the value of their export trade. The Markets of the World are depicted in a compact and novel form so as to indicate in a graphic manner the Commercial Regions of the World at present exploited or neglected by the British Exporters. A systematic attempt is made to show by map and diagram the World’s Trade in its general features, the foreign indebtedness to British capital, and the actual share taken in Foreign Trade by the United Kingdom and the British Empire compared with that in the hands of our great commercial rivals. — VI. PREFACE. The Atlas also contains a complete series of Commercial Maps, exhibiting the Natural Resources, the Industries, and the Means of Communication of all the Countries of the World. On thus series of maps, the Manufactures and Natural Products of each Region are shown by an elaborate system of symbols and names, and the main communications by land and sea are shown prominently in colours. Trade Diagrams are given for each country, showing in actual figures (as distinct from percentages) the shares held by other countries in its commerce ; the returns being the Annual Average of the last three years available, thus avoiding as far as possible the fluctuations of “boom” or “slump” periods. The nature and value of the principal commodities of import and export are also given in a more detailed series of diagrams than has hitherto been published. One other feature that helps to make this series of maps unique as a source of authoritative commercial information, is the inclusion of Tables of Distance and Time by Rail for each country, which, together with the Tables of Steamship Lines, show at a glance the time in days and hours occupied — in transit from place to place information of great importance to business men and travellers alike. The names of the actual Mail Steamship Companies trading between each country are in addition marked in nearly every case. The coloured maps are supplemented by a Commercial Compendium, dealing elaborately with the source and nature of every commodity of Commercial importance. The Compendium also includes a very complete series of Supplementary Tables, summarising the trade of the World, together with other statistical information of commercial interest, and a Gazetteer-Index of 6,300 names. — Many further novel features such as the Pictorial Diagrams, presenting in a new and attractive form many phases of the World’s economic condition might be noted, but the publishers trust this brief outline of its scope is sufficient to substantiate their claim that the Chamber of Commerce Atlas opens up entirely new ground, and should prove indispensable to every business man.
