of the several nations of the world. Philadelphia: Pr. by Mathew Carey, 1794. 4to. [6 (5 blank)], (3)—572, [4 (blank)] pp.; 2 plts.
Vol. I of 2 volumes, without Carey's General Atlas containing the maps. First American edition, "corrected, improved, and greatly
enlarged." Preface dated, Philadelphia, February 5, 1794. First edition printed in London, in 1770. Frequently reprinted and translated
into French, in 1801. This edition contains much additional information relating to the United States not found in the English editions.
17 maps were issued for the first volume, but Evans says that these were seldom bound with the work. (Carey's General Atlas,
published in 1796, includes all the maps issued with his edition of Guthrie's work and it is in this form that the maps which
accompany this work are usually found; this atlas volume is not present here.)
Evans 27077; Sabin 29327. Spine with five raised hubs forming six "compartments," with the leather of the top two
compartments chipped away, and some chipping at bottom. Covers missing. Soiling, age-toning, browning, and occasional spots of
foxing. Previous owner's signature (Joseph H. Dulles) at top of title-page. Short tears and chips to first few and final two leaves.
Offsetting from plates facing pp. 11 and 19. One corner of pp. 178-179 torn, without loss. Ex-library, with spine shelving label and
charge pocket of the Mercantile Library at rear free endpaper. Does not include the maps usually bound in a separate volume.
Otherwise, complete. (6997)
