The conference was organized by China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) and co-organizedbyChineseAcademyofSciences(CAS).233delegatesfrom23countriesofAsia,Africa, Europe,NorthAmericaandAustraliaparticipatedintheconferenceandthisconferencewasremarkedas asplendidmeetingforthepetroleumgeochemistrydomainintheAfro-Asianregion. TheAfro-AsianAssociationofPetroleumGeochemists(AAAPG)isaninternationalacademicorgani- zationintheAfro-Asianregion.Sinceitsfoundation,theassociationhasheldsixinternationalacademic conferences, the first was convened in Dehradun, India in 1985, the second in Beijing, China in 1988, thethirdinMelbourne,Australiain1992,thefourthinArusha,Tanzaniain1996,thefifthinNewDelhi, Indiain2000andthesixthinBeijing,Chinaagain.Thesepastconferenceshaveplayedanimportantrole inenhancingacademicexchangingbetweentheAfro-Asianpetroleumgeochemistsandtheircolleagues inothercontinentsaswellasinstrengtheningourmutualfriendshipandcooperation. Thesixthinternationalconference(AAAPG-2004,Beijing)received210abstractsandduringthecon- ference21talksweregivenattheplenarymeeting,92talkswereaddressedattheparallelsessionsand 56postersweredemonstrated.Manyfamousgeochemistsdeliveredhighlighttalksattheplenarymeeting, they were Mr. K. Chandra (India), Chairman of the Fifth Executive Council ofAAAPG; Prof. Ping’an Peng(China),ViceChairmanoftheFifthExecutiveCouncilofAAAPG;Dr.C.M.Ekweozor(Nigeria), ViceChairmanoftheFifthExecutiveCouncilofAAAPG;Prof.ShuichangZhang(China),Memberof theFifthExecutiveCouncilofAAAPG;Dr.K.Kagya(Tanzania),MemberoftheFifthExecutiveCouncil ofAAAPG; Dr. E. Subroto (Indonesia), Member of the Fifth Executive Council ofAAAPG and some world-known scholars including Prof. D.W. Welte (Germany), Prof. J.M. Moldowan (U.S.A.), Dr. L.R. The talks and papers presented to this conference covered varieties of research fields including (1)geochemistryonexplorationinnewlyprospectingareasandontheformationofgiantoil/gasfields; (2)petroleumsystem;(3)basinmodeling;(4)dynamicsofhydrocarbongenerationandcarbonisotopes; (5) geochemistry on source rocks and oil-source correlation; (6) geochemistry of natural gases and the biogenicgas;(7)oil/gasexpulsionandprimarymigration;(8)moleculargeochemistryandbiomarkers; (9)organicpetrology;and(10)therelationshipbetweenpresentorpaleo-geothermalfieldsandhydro- carbons.These topics, on the whole, are involved with nearly all the hotspots and frontiers of current petroleumgeochemistryresearchesintheworldandhavemirroredthenewestdevelopmentofpetroleum geochemistryintheAfro-Asianregion. Thepapersandtalkspresentedatthisconferencehavedrawnthefollowingconclusions: 1. Petroleumgeochemistryhasplayedanon-substitutableimportantroleindeterminingeffectivesource rocks,classifyingpetroleumsystems,delineatinggenesesofconventionalandunconventionaloilsand gases,tracingbackthedynamicprocessofpetroleumaccumulations,guidingthefinaldetermination ofprospectingtargetareasandreducingtheexplorationriskinaseriesofnewandsignificantoil-gas discoveriesintheAfro-Asianregion. 2. Basinmodelingandpetroleumsystemclassificationthatarefullyapplyinggeochemicaldataarethe twodevelopingorientationstoenhancethepetroleumexplorationeffects. 3. Molecular geochemistry and biomarkers have made significant progresses in their applications in petroleum exploration, which are symbolized in three aspects by the identification and application of age-indicating biomarkers, the application of diamondoids in appraising the cracking level of IX
