Upon completion of a project it is a pleasure to express thanks to the many
people involved.
First of all I would like to thank the contributors for their willingness to be
part of the project - here, I am especially grateful to those colleagues who do
not work in disciplines normally related to the Hebrew Bible to undertake the
risk of being part of an essay collection dealing with the Bible.
Secondly, my sincere thanks to Prof. Dr. D. Otto Kaiser for enthusiastically
embracing the project from the start, his many helpful ideas, his support and
his initial acceptance of the volume into the series BZAW. Also many thanks to
the new editorial board of BZAW, Prof. Dr. John Barton, Prof. Dr. Reinhard
G. Kratz, Prof. Dr. Choon-Leong Seow and Prof. Dr. Markus Witte for their
continued willingness to have the book included in their series as well as for

It was with great sadness that we learned of the untimely death of Professor
Hans-Peter Müller, while this volume has been in preparation. The exegetical
community in general and scholarship on the Song of Songs in particular has
lost one of its most prolific members. As will be obvious from many essays in

this volume we owe him a great deal in our interpretation of the Song of
Songs. Despite this sombre moment, it is nevertheless a pleasure that Prof.
Müller was able to contribute an article to this collection and that one of his
last publications could be included here. I believe it is only fitting to dedicate
this volume to his memory.
