Printed in Germany Cover Design: Christopher Schneidcr, Berlin Hans-Peter Müller in memoriam Acknowledgements Upon completion of a project it is a pleasure to express thanks to the many people involved. First of all I would like to thank the contributors for their willingness to be part of the project - here, I am especially grateful to those colleagues who do not work in disciplines normally related to the Hebrew Bible to undertake the risk of being part of an essay collection dealing with the Bible. Secondly, my sincere thanks to Prof. Dr. D. Otto Kaiser for enthusiastically embracing the project from the start, his many helpful ideas, his support and his initial acceptance of the volume into the series BZAW. Also many thanks to the new editorial board of BZAW, Prof. Dr. John Barton, Prof. Dr. Reinhard G. Kratz, Prof. Dr. Choon-Leong Seow and Prof. Dr. Markus Witte for their continued willingness to have the book included in their series as well as for several useful suggestions prior to publication. The editorial staff at W. de Gruyter, Monika Müller and Dr. Albrecht Döhnert has been most helpful during the production of the volume. The co- operation has been wonderful - many thanks for that. Finally, I thank Mr. Björn Corzilius (Berlin) and Ms. Teresa Nieser (Lyon) for copious proofreading and careful assistance during the preparation of the volume for publication. Needless to say, all remaining errors are the one of the editor. Authors, editor, and publisher have undertaken every attempt to assert the rights of all other authors and publishers. We regret, however, that despite this effort we have not succeeded in clarifying the copyright situation for the following two figures: Figure 2 (p. 113): Fishing and fowling from the Dyn. XVIII tomb of Menena (TT 69), in: Alan H. GARDINER and Ν. M. DAVIES, Lapdnture egpptwnne ancienne, vol. I, Paris: A. Guillot 1953 and Figure 5 (p. 116): Music and eroticism from the Dyn. XVIII tomb of Djeserkareseneb (TT 38), in: Alan H. GARDINER and Ν. M. DAVIES, La peinture egyptienne ancienne, vol. II, Paris: A. Guillot 1953. At the same time, my sincere thanks to the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago, and the Egypt Exploration Society for granting permission to use their illustrations. It was with great sadness that we learned of the untimely death of Professor Hans-Peter Müller, while this volume has been in preparation. The exegetical community in general and scholarship on the Song of Songs in particular has lost one of its most prolific members. As will be obvious from many essays in Vlll Acknowledgements this volume we owe him a great deal in our interpretation of the Song of Songs. Despite this sombre moment, it is nevertheless a pleasure that Prof. Müller was able to contribute an article to this collection and that one of his last publications could be included here. I believe it is only fitting to dedicate this volume to his memory. Anselm C. Hagedorn Berlin, August 2005 Table of Contents Acknowledgements vii Contributors xi List of Abbreviations xiii ANSELM C.
