The topic is one fraught with moral, political and sexual tensions, which the contributors tackle from a range of contemporary theoretical perspectives, such as feminism, post-structuralism, Marxism, Lacanian psychoanalysis and film theory. In so doing they challenge established views and seek to open doors for further exploration and debate. The editors would like to thank Jane Gibb, Keith Shand, Lesley Bloom, Hazel Day, Graham Eyre, Carol Diethe and Frances Arnold for all their help and encouragement. G. D. and C. B. vii Notes on the Contributors Alison Assiter teaches Philosophy at Thames Polytechnic. She has published numerous articles and is the author of Pornography and Feminism. Clive Bloom is Coordinator of American Studies at Middlesex Polytechnic. He is General Editor of the Insights series and is the author of two books, The 'Occult' Experience and the New Criticism and Reading Poe, Reading Freud: The Romantic Imagination in Crisis. Laura Claridge is Assistant Professor of English at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. She is a frequent speaker at conferences and has published widely on feminist issues. She is currently working on a book, The Paradox of Desire, and is co-editor of Male Feminist Voices. Anthony Crabbe teaches History of Art and Design at Trent Polytechnic. His research interests include Cubism and Purism and he is currently writing a book on the philosophical concept of time. Gary Day is a member of the Graduate Centre of Middlesex Polytechnic. He is writing his doctoral thesis on Dickens. He has published various articles and poetry. Carol Diethe is a lecturer in German at Middlesex Polytechnic. She is currently translating Mafarka le futuriste by F. Marinelli. Richard Ellis teaches English and American Literature and Cultural Studies at North Staffordshire Polytechnic. He has published a number of articles on critical theory in practice. Maggie Humm is Coordinator of Women's Studies at North East London Polytechnic. She has published a number of articles and essays on a wide range of feminist issues. She is also a member of Network, which represents women teaching in the humanities. Avis Lewallen studied English at North London Polytechnic and is currently completing an MAin Women's Studies at the University viii Notes on the Contributors ix of Kent. She has contributed an article on pornography in popular fiction to The Female Gaze. Michael Woolf teaches literature at Tottenham College of Tech nology and writes on cultural matters for BBC Radio 4.
