In Personnel Protection: Security Personnel, pre- senters Jerome Miller and Radford Jones discuss the criteria with which executive security personnel are selected and the requirements for training. In this seven-minute proven practices presentation, which is one of 11 modules in the Personnel Protection series, the presenters highlight the pros and cons of proprietary and contractual personnel and the benefits and disadvantages of armed and unarmed personnel. General selection criteria, including personality, physical ability, and experi- ence, are also included. When training security personnel, the presen- ters stress the importance of adapting the training program to fit the unique needs of the executive under protection. Miller has served as a commander in the Detroit Police Department and as the senior manager of international and special security opera- tions at Chrysler Corporation. Jones is the former manager of global security and fire protection at Ford Motor Company and spent 20 years in the public sector with the US Secret Service. WHAT ARE PROVEN PRACTICES? Proven practices are visual PowerPoint presentations with audio narra- tion that provide proven concepts and practices for security and busi- ness professionals seeking new and creative ways to understand and shape security. Proven practices have been created by experienced practitioners of leading organizations and describe concepts or prac- tices that have been successfully implemented and are proven to work. They provide a framework that can be quickly customized and incor- porated to meet the specific needs of an organization and its culture. Practitioners use proven practices to learn about applications, provide viii ExecutiveSummary staff training, or create organizational awareness. Educators enhance current curriculums by adding real-world insight and workplace con- text from relevant practitioners who have held positions similar to those students are preparing for. Proven practices can be utilized to enhance course offerings as a “guest lecture” option.
