ACCEA BRONZE AWARD 2013 Name: CARL HENEGHAN GMC/GDC Number: 4731643 Speciality: ACADEMIC GP My work in self-monitoring of oral anticoagulation, reporting a 50% reduction in thrombotic events, has widely influenced guidelines and practice. Reflecting my expertise in NonCommunicable Diseases (NCDs), I am chair of the WHO guideline in self-care in NCDs and breast cancer screening. In addition, I am leading an international research agenda for self care. I have directly contributed to NICE AF QOF markers, and my expertise in medical devices has led to advising the UK Gov't Health Select committee and the US FDA. I am Professor of Evidence-Based Medicine and Director of the Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine and International Programs in Evidence-Based Healthcare at the University of Oxford. It has also allowed me to facilitate the development of local simulation facilities for clinicians. I introduced locally based critical incident reporting to our department with monthly open discussion of clinical error and problems. The method of open, but confidential discussion of mistakes has led to the wider recognition of error and led changes in practice and equipment in response to the problems identified. I have pioneered the extraction of clinical data from our hospital systems but designing a database which can extract personal data from that routinely collected by our organisation and allows each clinician to be given a personal report with both their own performance and that of their peers for comparison, extracted from over 70,000 records. I led the educational development of a Graduate Entry Medical Programme from a two year collaboration to a stand alone four year course which which now has students in its final year. NHS Scotland and Wales use the Six as a performance metric. We're endorsed by the Royal Colleges of Physicians, Surgeons & Nursing, Society for Acute Medicine, Intensive Care Society (ICS), and Patients' Association. As CEO of Global Sepsis Alliance, I wrote the World Sepsis Declaration and pioneered World Sepsis Day in 2012.
