Una de las más ricas colecciones privadas de fotografía latinoamericana, la de Leti‑
cia y Stanislas Poniatowski, es el punto de partida del proyecto Urbes mutantes, el
cual conjunta imágenes de distintas ciudades de esta región geográfica, cultural,
histórica y social con el fin de mostrarlas en su huidiza condición, revelando la es‑
tética, los ideales y las esperanzas que sobre la “modernidad” han sido plasmadas
desde mediados del siglo XX.
El libro incluye imágenes urbanas captadas tanto por maestros de la talla de
Paolo Gasparini, Lourdes Grobet, Óscar Pintor, Fernell Franco y otros fotógrafos
ahora redescubiertos, que ayudan a conformar el todo de una mirada que atraviesa
diversos temas centrales de las ciudades latinoamericanas: vida nocturna, cultura
popular, movimientos de masas y protestas políticas, así como los contrastes entre
las arquitecturas vernáculas y modernas.

Siguiendo al enorme éxito de The Afronauts, publicamos Party, el nuevo fotolibro de
Cristina de Middel.
Party fue concebido por Cristina después de un primer viaje a China en 2012,
que empezó con el propósito de “hacer fotografía, de reaccionar con la cámara a
cualquier cosa que capturara mi atención, sin ningún intento de explicar o analizar”.
Regresó “con una gran serie de fotografías que fueron difíciles de clasificar y editar,
ya que el único común denominador fue mi propio asombro”. PARTY es un fotolibro
que se construyó sobre la base del Pequeño Libro Rojo de Mao. Es un libro con
citas “nuevas” y un espíritu libre que de alguna manera nos muestra lo que China
es hoy en día. Cristina utiliza el esqueleto del Pequeño Libro Rojo de Mao —lo que
solía ser la “Biblia” del pueblo chino— para crear una narrativa particular.
Como Cristina misma lo dice: “Decidí adaptar esta declaración política histórica
a los tiempos modernos censurando y ocultando las partes del texto que ya no
están en vigor y recalcando algunas otras frases rediseñadas que, para mí, forman
un retrato más exacto de la República Popular China en el siglo veintiuno”.

PARTY, the new photobook by Cristina de Middel, follows on the enormous
success of The Afronauts.
PARTY was conceived by Cristina after a first trip to China in 2012, under-
taken in the aim of “making photography, of reacting with the camera to
whatever caught my attention, without any attempt to explain or analyze.”
She returned “with a large series of photographs that were hard to classify
and edit, since the only common denominator was my own astonishment.”
PARTY is a photobook built on the foundation of Mao’s Little Red Book. It is
a book with “new” quotations and a free spirit that somehow shows us what
China is today. Cristina uses the skeleton of Mao’s little book—what used to
be the “Bible” of the Chinese people—to create a particular narrative.
As Cristina herself puts it: “I decided to adapt this historic political state-
ment to modern times by censoring and hiding the parts of the text that are
no longer in force and highlighting some other redesigned sentences that, for
me, form a more accurate portrait of the People´s Republic of China in the
