1. Carefully follow all the test registration procedures
2. Know the test directions, duration, topics, question types, how many
questions
3. Setup a flexible study schedule at least 3-4 weeks before test day
4. Study during the time of day you are most alert, relaxed, and stress free
5. Maximize your learning style; visual learner use visual study aids, auditory
learner use auditory study aids
6. Focus on your weakest knowledge base
7. Find a study partner to review with and help clarify questions

Verbal Test Review
The Verbal test of the RN Pre-entrance Exam consists of a total of 60 questions
in two categories: Word Knowledge and Reading Comprehension.

Word Knowledge

Determining Word Meaning
An understanding of the basics of language is helpful, and often vital, to
understanding what you read. The term structural analysis refers to looking at
the parts of a word and breaking it down into its different components to
determine the word’s meaning. Parts of a word include prefixes, suffixes, and
the root word. By learning the meanings of prefixes, suffixes, and other word
fundamentals, you can decipher the meaning of words which may not yet be in
your vocabulary. Prefixes are common letter combinations at the beginning of
words, while suffixes are common letter combinations at the end. The main part
of the word is known as the root. Visually, it would look like this: prefix + root
word + suffix. Look first at the individual meanings of the root word, prefix
and/or suffix. Using knowledge of the meaning(s) of the prefix and/or suffix to
see what information it adds to the root. Even if the meaning of the root is
unknown, one can use knowledge of the prefix’s and/or suffix’s meaning(s) to
determine an approximate meaning of the word. For example, if one sees the
word uninspired and does not know what it means, they can use the knowledge
that un- means ‘not’ to know that the full word means “not inspired.”
Understanding the common prefixes and suffixes can illuminate at least part of
the meaning of an unfamiliar word.
