The life of Pauline Jewett is an enrich- ing story of the accomplishments that are possible when a woman has the will, self-confidence, and courage to follow her dreams. As will become evident, Pauline experienced a number of disappoint- ments in both her personal and her public life. However, she had the drive and perseverance to continue her quest to make a difference through public service. As a public figure, Pauline was often sought out by journalists for political responses to international incidents, particularly when she served as external affairs critic for the New Democratic Party from 1979 to 1987. On at least eight occasions she was part of an expert panel on The Journal and The National, Canada's most watched news programs. Her opinion was solicited on such diverse issues as Can- ada's involvement in NATO, the U.S. invasion of Grenada, Star Wars, apartheid, and the testing of the cruise missile in Canada. Her official political career had begun some fifteen years earlier when she served as a Liberal member of Parliament from 1963 to 1965. During her years as a Liberal Party supporter and sitting member, she devel- oped strong beliefs about Canadian nationalism and sovereignty. Over time, her passionate nationalism established the philosophical framework for her other political beliefs. Pauline's main policy interests were international relations and peace and disarmament, but she also had a great affection for young people and was committed to removing obstacles that stood in the PREFACE ix
