Jeremy duQuesnay Adams is Assistant Professor of History at Yale University, where he has served as Director of Graduate Studies for the Medieval Studies Program. His doctoral thesis, Sense of Community in the Early Middle Ages: ‘populus’ and other socio­ political terms in the works of Jerome, Augustine, and Isidore of Seville, is now being considered by univer­ sity presses. At present he holds a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Humanities for 1969-70 to work on a book on alien-exclusion policies in Visi- gothic Spain (fifth-eighth centuries a.d.).
