Club Information The annual dues payment of $5 in the Pennsylvania Area Token Collectors Organization (PATCO) entitles members to receive the twice-yearly PATCO Journal and to submit a free 30-word classified ad for each issue. The goal of this organization is not to limit itself to the exonumia and collectibles of Pennsylvania, but to explore the more diverse collecting interests of its members. To achieve this goal, members are urged to submit articles on subjects that interest them. New Castle Zoo Tokens By Rich Bottles Jr. Usually a trip to one of the Living Treasures Wild Animal Parks mean making sure you have sufficient quarters and cents to use the elongated coin rolling machines. But a trip last fall to the New Castle/Moraine location in Lawrence County produced a new kind of exonumia to my collection. The gift shop featured a medal dispensing machine, where you could purchase four different brass medals featuring animals, for $5 a piece (cash or credit cards accepted). Usually when I see this type of souvenir machine, the medals are generic and do not include a city location. But I was pleasantly surprised to see that this series of medals included the inscription, ‘"New Castle, Pennsylvania.5' The series of four medals feature the following animals: ZEBRA; FLAMINGO; GIRAFFE; and TIGER. The reverse of each 37mm round brass medal has the same inscription: LIVING / TREASURES / WILD ANIMAL PARK / NEW CASTLE, / PENNSYLVANIA (there is also a small MM mintmark at the bottom). According to the Living Treasures website, “Living Treasures Wild Animal Park's Moraine location was built and opened in 1992 by Tom Guiher and his two young children, Fawn (age 9) and Adam (age 6)... In 1991, land was acquired along US 422 near New Castle. Fences and buildings were built, wells drilled, habitats constructed and many new species were acquired. The Grand Opening was Memorial Day weekend of 1992. “In 1997, Tom purchased the 9 acre parcel located on route 711 in Donegal. Through that winter, the Laurel Highlands location was built. Opening in April 1998, many animals that were born and raised at the Moraine location were transferred, and many new exhibits were procured from other animal parks around the United States and Canada. In 1999, Log Cabin Lodge and Suites, and in 2000, Mountain Horse Saddlery & Gifts, were built at the Laurel Highlands location." I have yet to visit the Laurel Highlands/Donegal location in Westmoreland County to see if it also offers a series of zoo medals, but that would make a good day trip, especially since my daughter loves zoos.
