Pennsylvania Area Token Collectors Organization Volume 28 - Issue 1 in this issue: “PAPA’S TOKENS” by Rich Bottles Jr. “Unlisted PA Merchant Tokens (part 11)” by Lany Dziubek (Starting with Volume 23-Issue 1, an attempt is being made by PATCO members to build a list of tokens not known when the PA tome was published. We try to follow the example of Dr. Aqua, but stray from the strict standards. There are some storecards included that are not issued by pure mercnants. Food Stamp tokens are not included, but we are compiling a separate list of them and need your help. Some, but not all plastic tokens, are included herein. New Independent Brewing Co. varieties are not .entered into this list, but are maintained in our database. Some entries are incomplete, because only partial data was provided in eBay sales or retail listings. You are invited to add or correct any of this information if you have seen the actual token. Write to Larry Dziubek.) (A common obverse of the amusement tokens issued annually in Carnegie PA by the Professional & Amateur Pinball Association, a.k.a. PAPA) PAPA'S TOKENS By Rich Bottles Jr. Keeping up with the latest bar chips or elongated coins in the geographic region that you collect can be a daunting task. Newly issued amusement tokens, specifically video game tokens, are also difficult to keep track of o to monitor. In the case of video game tokens, a collector may love the tokens but may hate to visit those noisy, child-infested arcades. Many of us wouid rather slit our wrists than enter a Chuck E. Cheese. But still, even I was surprised to discover that there could be as many as 15 localiy-issued amusement tokens from Carnegie that! never knew about until this year (and more are expected to be issued in future years;. Chances are, if you collect Pittsburgh-area tokens, you haven't heard abouttne tokens either. My brother and my nephew, who enjoy playing the classic pinball games, attended the annua! "Pinburgh Match-Play Championship" at the Professional & Amateur Pinball Association (PAPA) World Headquarters facility at 100 Keystone Drive in ScottTownship/Carnegie, PA, near the intersection of 1-79 and 1-279. in .2004, Steve Epstein, who founded the world-famous Broadway Arcade in New' York City, helped turn a large warehouse in Carnegie into .a 30,000 foot mega-arcade containing 400 pinball machines, a projection screen and Internet kiosks. The .building was designed to be the permanent venue for the World Pinball Championships Consequently, the facility is only open to the public twice a year, specifically forthe World Pinball Championships and the Pinburgh Match-Play Championship. My Drotner attended the 2012 Pinburgh Match-Piay Championship, which -was -held from March 30 through April 2. Players of all skill levels, as well as spectators, can attend the Match-Piay Championship. To play any of the practice machines, each play requires two tokens to activate themachine. A roll of tokens costs 510. There is a custom, collectible token issued for Pinburgh attendees oniy. One custom token is included in •each roll of tokens sold et the event.Token.purchases go directly to charity. In2011,3l2r550»was raised-for-the Western Pennsylvania Humane Society. My brother was kind enough to obtain three different PAPA tokens forme atthe Spring Pinourgh event. All oftne nickel tokenshave a standard PAPA obverse, but each has a unique reverse design. I was impressed by the unusual and intricately-designed devices on the tokens, so I contacted a PAPA representative to ask ifthere were any more designs. The administrator of the PAPA Facebook page responded to my inquiry, stating, "There are actually 15 unique PAPA token designs, and the smoking helmet is from the Pinburgh 2012 Match Piay Championship. We're probably going to write a blog post in the next few weeks about all oftne token designs - there are many people interested in collecting them." (The nickel tokens are 23mm. The smoking cat token in the center is dated 2011, while the smoking helmet token on the right is from this year's 2012 Spring event. The left token is anyone's guess). X7 A 21 R J. W. (A nineteenth century' brass trade token from the infamous Atlantic Garden Hotel of St. Clair, Pennsylvania) (CONTINUED EROM NEXT "PAGE) dancing jigs and singing Irish ballads. He also boasted of being a murderer and.a forger. McKenna’s act fooled Patrick Dormer and he.eventually introduced the stranger to an AOH Chief Officer, who allowed the man to join the organization. Using his new contacts over the next couple of years, McKenna was able to participate in the discussions and plotting of a number crimes, including murder, kidnapping and the destruction of a railroad bridge. It turned out that McKenna’s real name was James McFarland and he was a detective with Pinkerton Agency, working specifically for the union-busting interests of railroad and coal baron Franklin B. Gowen. Gowen then served as prosecutor of a number of AOH members, who also happened to be union leaders. McFarland testified at the trials. Gowen’s successful prosecutions resulted in a debilitating blow to the coal union and helped to prematurely end a strike. Gowen’s life later ended prematurely in 1889 at the Wormley Hotel in Washington, DC, with a bullet in his head.
