However, sadly this is going to be my last Welcome. If you are a subscriber you will have received a letter with your copy of this issue explaining that the magazine is closing. It’s such a sad day as P&Q has been around for so long. But let’s look ahead to brighter things and what we have for you in this last issue. Some quick pieced quilts for you this month featuring fabrics from Art Gallery Fabrics – The Great Outdoors Quilt is the perfect quilt for lounging on in the garden, while the cute Petite Circus Playmat features classic circus fi gures. If pastel quilts are your thing, then perhaps the Butterfl y Bows Cot Quilt will inspire you; it can also be made quite quickly. The Sewing Room Sewing Machine Throw Cover features haberdashery fabrics from Makower and will keep the dust off your machine when it’s not in use. Stuart’s Stashbusting block this month is an old classic. As this is the last issue, we are going to be unable to fi nish the Calendar Quilt project I’m afraid; a diff erent quilt setting alternating the blocks with plain squares will enable you to make a quilt at least. Not fi nishing the quilt as Roz designed it is one of the hardest parts about the magazine closing, for both of us. We’ve got some excellent articles for you to read this month. Helen visited Quilts UK for us and has reviewed the winning quilts in the fi rst show at Malvern for three years. On a more personal level, we take a look at the Icknield Quilters recent exhibition celebrating their 30th anniversary. We also visit the William Morris Gallery in Walthamstow while our regular Colour Me contributor, Kenzo Nakamura explains the background to some of his recent designs in Exploring Pentagons. And so, there we have it; 335 issues over thirty seven years, from humble quarterly beginnings to a monthly magazine enjoyed by many. I want to thank each and every one of you for reading and enjoying the magazine over all those years. Keep quilting!Joanna P&Q Magazine, Eden House, Enterprise Way, Edenbridge, Kent TN8 6HF. When Di sadly passed away, the company was taken over by Judi Mendelssohn, another former editor of P&Q. Like many others, P&Q Tours has had challenges to face over the past couple of years but they continue in their quest to provide something for quilters to look forward to with retreats in the UK and a tour to Orkney as well as a return to the Houston Quilt Festival later this year which also includes a couple of chill out days in San Antonio with gems like the Texas Quilt Museum along the way. 2023 sees the return of their most popular tour to Paducah, For more information Kentucky as well as Nantes and Sitges in Europe, more sewing email Judi on retreats in the UK and the new quilt show in Yokohama, Japan. [email protected] u3a 40th Anniversary Quilt A patchwork quilt marking the 40th anniversary of the charity, u3a, is to be revealed in Manchester on 17 June. The quilt showcases the incredible creative skills of u3a members from across the UK. u3a is a national learning organisation in which those no longer in full time work can come together to develop their interests, make new friends and have fun. A distinguished panel of judges, including our own Stuart Hillard, picked forty designs from more than fifty entries, which truly evoked the benefits of positive ageing and u3a’s strapline, ‘Learn, Laugh, Live’. The designs range from the beautiful rolling landscape of the South Downs by Liphook u3a’s walking group, to highly-detailed hand-sewn portraits of members of Olton and District u3a giving a positive thumbs up sign. There’s also a tree of life by Whitney u3a, symbolising the knowledge and learning gained by members. Sam Mauger, chief executive of u3a, said it was really important to the charity that, through collaboration, a four decades of the u3a movement and the amazing permanent record of the amazing skills of its members was opportunities it offers. We are extremely grateful to all at created. ‘The 40th Anniversary Quilt is a lasting legacy which the Whitworth Gallery where the quilt will be revealed on I know the next generation of u3a members will appreciate. 17 June before going on display at The Blanket Hall, Witney, We wanted to show, through the quilt, that age makes no Oxfordshire, in August.’ difference to what you can achieve in life, what you can do, what you can contribute. It is a wonderful way to celebrate For more information on u3a visit www.u3a.org.uk 6 British Patchwork & Quilting JULY 2022 EXHIBITIONS Please ensure you contact any quilt group or organiser nearer the time of any exhibition to check it has not been cancelled due to Covid restrictions.
