Oralhistory is amethod ofcollecting historical information through tape-recorded interviews between a narratorwith firsthand knowledge ofhistorically significant events and a well-informed interviewer, with the goal of preservingsubstantiveadditionstothehistoricalrecord.Thetaperecordingistranscribed,lightlyeditedfor continuity and clarity, andreviewedby the interviewee. The corrected manuscript is indexed, bound with photographs and illustrative materials, and placed in The BancroftLibrary at the University ofCalifornia, Berkeley, and in otherresearch collections forscholarlyuse. Because itisprimary material, oral historyis not intended to present the final, verified, orcomplete narrative ofevents.
