Emancipation of women is an essential pre-requisite for economic development and social progress of the nation. Women play an important and vital role in animal husbandry occupation as manager, decision makers and skilled workers. The contribution of dairy farm women in terms of time and effort is not low or less than men. In India, women’s involvement in livestock management is a long standing tradition and livestock rearing has been as integral part of homestead farming system. Animal husbandry occupation is an important source of income among rural households. Most of the important tasks in animal husbandry activities are performed by dairy farm women besides fulfilling their responsibilities as home makers. Moreover, the knowledge and skill of the dairy Abstract farm women and their participation in decision-making certainly affects efficiency in their work. It was, therefore, felt necessary to undertake the present study entitled “PARTICIPATION OF DAIRY FARM WOMEN IN ANIMAL HUSBANDRY OCCUPATION” with the following specific objectives: 1. To study the profile of dairy farm women involved in animal husbandry occupation. 2. To measure the knowledge level of dairy farm women regarding recommended animal husbandry practices. 3. To study the participation of dairy farm women in decision-making about animal husbandry occupation. 4. To study the extent of participation of dairy farm women in animal husbandry occupation. 5. To study the relationship between profile of dairy farm women and their extent of participation in animal husbandry occupation. 6. To study the constraints faced by the dairy farm women in animal husbandry occupation. 7. To seek suggestions from dairy farm women to overcome the constraints in animal husbandry occupation. The present investigation was purposively carried out in Anand taluka of Anand district, where production of milk is highest as compared to other talukas. Ten villages having the larger number of female members in milk producers’ co- operative societies were selected purposively. The dairy farm women were ii Abstract selected by proportionate sampling method. Thus, the sample consisted of 120 respondents for the study. The independent variables undertaken in this study were: age, education, experience in animal husbandry occupation, size of family, social participation, size of land holding, time spent in dairy activities, herd size, expenditure on dairy animals, occupation, annual income, mass media exposure, extension contact, scientific orientation, risk orientation, knowledge level regarding recommended animal husbandry practices and participation in decision- making. The dependent variable chosen for the purpose of the study was extent of participation of dairy farm women in animal husbandry occupation. The independent and dependent variables were measured by using suitable scales and procedures adopted by various researchers. The interview schedule was prepared keeping in view the objectives of the study. Before its actual use, it was pre-tested and translated into Gujarati. The data of this study were collected by arranging personal interview with 120 respondents of the 10 selected villages. The data so collected were classified, tabulated and analyzed in order to make the findings meaningful. The statistical measures such as percentage, mean score, standard deviation and coefficients of correlation were used. MAJOR FINDINGS: The important findings of the study were as under: iii Abstract 1. Majority (77.50 per cent and 67.50 per cent) of the dairy farm women belonged to young to middle age group and were having secondary to higher secondary level of education, respectively. 2. A large majority (80.83 per cent) of the dairy farm women had medium to high level of experience in animal husbandry occupation. 3. Slight more than two-third (68.33 per cent) of the dairy farm women had big size of family. 4. Majority (60.83 per cent) of the dairy farm women were having membership in one or more than one organizations. 5. Exactly half (50.00 per cent) of the dairy farm women were found to possess marginal to small size of land holding. 6. Majority (70.83 per cent) of the dairy farm women spent on an average more than 4 hours per day for performing the task related to livestock keeping. 7. A great majority (85.83 per cent and 77.34 per cent) of the dairy farm women had medium to large herd size and had medium to high level of expenditure (ranging from Rs. 1,501/- to Rs. 3,000/- and above) on dairy animals. 8. Slight more than two-fifth (42.50 per cent) of the dairy farm women were having farming and animal husbandry as their main occupation, followed by slight more than one-third (34.17 per cent) of the respondents were having Farming + animal husbandry + businesses as their main occupation. iv Abstract 9. A large majority (78.34 per cent) of the dairy farm women had low to medium level of annual income (up to Rs.1,00,000/-). 10. A vast majority (82.50 per cent and 88.33 per cent) of the dairy farm women were found to have medium to high level of mass media exposure and extension contact, respectively. 11. A vast majority (90.00 per cent and 80.83 per cent) of the dairy farm women had medium to high level of scientific orientation and risk orientation, respectively. 12. A large majority (85.83 per cent) of the respondents were found with medium to high level of knowledge regarding recommended animal husbandry practices. 13. A great majority (83.33 per cent) of the dairy farm women had medium to high level of participation in decision-making about animal husbandry occupation. 14. The participation of dairy farm women was observed more in aspects of milking and preparing milk products (rank I), followed by feeding of milch animals (rank II), health care and management of milch animals (rank III) and breeding of milch animals (rank IV). The less participation of dairy farm women was observed in general aspects of animal husbandry occupation (rank V). 15. A large majority (83.33 per cent) of the dairy farm women had medium to high extent of participation in animal husbandry occupation. v Abstract 16. There was negative and non-significant relationship between age of the dairy farm women and their extent of participation in animal husbandry occupation. Whereas, education had highly significant relationship with extent of participation of the dairy farm women. While, so far as experience of dairy farm women in animal husbandry occupation was concerned, there existed non-significant relationship with their extent of participation. 17. Respondents’ size of family had negative and non-significant relationship with their extent of participation in animal husbandry occupation. However, social participation of the respondents had positive and highly significant correlation with their extent of participation in animal husbandry occupation. 18. There was positive and highly significant relationship between respondents’ time spent in dairy activities, herd size, expenditure on dairy animals, occupation and annual income and their extent of participation in animal husbandry occupation. Whereas, size of land holding of the respondents had positive and significant correlation with their extent of participation in animal husbandry occupation. 19. There was positive and highly significant relationship of respondents’ mass media exposure and extension contact with their extent of participation in animal husbandry occupation. 20.
