Acknowledgments
This project came about because I did not believe that Sergei Diaghilev could
have found such a large and receptive audience for ballet in 1909 if Parisians
had not had an established creative ballet culture of their own. Like every-
one before me, I began by studying the repertoire of the Paris Opéra and
was disappointed with what I found. What I discovered later was not what I
expected, and I might not have found it at all had it not been for the pio-
neering research of Hélène Laplace-Claverie. I would like to thank her for her

Ballet du Québec, who presented me with what was at the time a rare copy of
