GGuuttsscchhee--MMiilllleerr..iinndddd vviiiiii 77//2222//22001155 88::3322::1122 PPMM Acknowledgments This project came about because I did not believe that Sergei Diaghilev could have found such a large and receptive audience for ballet in 1909 if Parisians had not had an established creative ballet culture of their own. Like every- one before me, I began by studying the repertoire of the Paris Opéra and was disappointed with what I found. What I discovered later was not what I expected, and I might not have found it at all had it not been for the pio- neering research of Hélène Laplace-Claverie. I would like to thank her for her advice and encouragement at the very beginning of my research. I would also like to thank Vincent Warren, then head librarian at the École Supérieure de Ballet du Québec, who presented me with what was at the time a rare copy of the book that instigated this project, Laplace-Claverie’s Écrire pour la danse: Les livrets de ballet de Théophile Gautier à Jean Cocteau (1870–1914). My research was made possible by substantial fellowships from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, a McGill University graduate scholarship and travel grant, an AMS Elizabeth Bartlet Research travel grant, and an AMS 75 PAYS publication subvention. I wish to thank Ralph Locke, Sonia Kane, Julia Cook, Ryan Peterson, and Tracey Engel at .d the University of Rochester Press for their always friendly assistance at various e vre stages of this process, and I would like to thank Dan Deutsch, who set my musi- ser sthg csoaml eex avmerpy lmesu adnddy prreopvrioddeudc etidointosr; iaanl das sDisetbanorcaeh; DMaivlilder R, womhoe rpor,o wohfroe acdle aan medan uup- ir llA script riddled with Canadian spellings and speckled with misplaced dashes. .sse This book would never have made it to completion without the contribu- rP re tions of family, friends, colleagues, librarians, and archivists. I am especially tseh indebted to the magasiniers of the Musée de l’Opéra, two of whom took it co R upon themselves one summer to search for missing documents—over the fo ytisrevin smpaancec eo jfo au rwneaelsk,, atnhde ya tsuertn oefd p uropg froaumrs —losatn sdc otore ms, aan py oas pterérs,i dae sneter idees soafl lep aetr ftohre- U .5 Bibliothèque nationale de France and the Bibliothèque historique de la ville 10 de Paris who found sources for arcane bits of information. Corinne Lebel, 2 © th curator at the Société des auteurs et compositeurs dramatiques, was also very g iryp generous with her time. oC I have received guidance from several scholars.
