There were 152 million females in the United States as of Nov. 1, 2006, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. That ex- ceeds the number of males by 4 million. About 68,000 of those women serve on active duty in the Air Force side-by-side with their male counterparts - a far cry from the early 19th century when women were consid- ered second-class citizens whose existence was limited to caring for the house and children. With the belief that intense physical or intellectual ac- tivity would be injurious to the delicate female biology and reproductive system, women were taught to refrain from pursuing any serious education. Since then, women fought for and received the right to vote in 1920, and have made strides to level the playing field be- tween men and women. Today women are paving their own way and launching successful careers.
