You have just purchased one of the many fine Andersen® products. Proper assembly, installation and maintenance are essential if the benefits of your Andersen product are to be fully attained. Therefore, please read and follow this instruction guide completely. If your abilities do not match this procedure’s requirements, contact an experienced contractor. Unless specifically ordered, Andersen windows and doors are not equipped with safety glass, and if broken, could fragment causing injury. Many laws and building codes require safety glass in locations adjacent to or near doors. Andersen windows are available with safety glass that may reduce the likelihood of injury when broken. Information on safety glass is available from your local Andersen dealer. • Andersen® Head Flashing and Installation Flanges DO NOT take the place of standard window and door flashing. Unit must be properly flashed and sealed with silicone for protection against water and air infiltration. Use non-reflective flashings. Highly reflective flashing tapes can raise the surface temperature of the vinyl to the point where vinyl deformation and product damage may occur. • Do not apply any type of film to glass. Thermal stress conditions resulting in glass damage could occur. • Use of movable insulating materials such as window coverings, shutters, and other shading devices may damage glass and/or vinyl. Instruction Guide 0005309 Revised 011/11/04 1 Panel Assembly and Installation Panel Assembly and Installation • Steel will corrode when used with ACQ Pressure Treated Lumber. • Obtain and use the appropriate size stainless steel screws, as called out in this installation guide, to fasten unit to any rough opening made from ACQ Pressure Treated Lumber. • Failure to use stainless steel fastners may result in fastner corrosion causing product damage. • The Door Frame (furnished in separate cartons) must be installed into opening before proceeding with panel installation. • Panel Hardware and Interlock Weatherstrip (both included in the Frame Package) are also needed. Finishing Interior Surface of Panels Frenchwood® and Narroline® Gliding Doors have a factory applied Perma-Shield® finish on the exterior surface. The interior surface and trim pieces must be finished (painted, stained, etc.). For ease of finishing it is recommended that it be done prior to panel installation. Refer to manufacturer's finishing and painting recommendations. Stationary Panel • From the exterior, lift the Stationary Panel and insert Blocking top between Insect Screen Guide and Parting Stop into operating side of frame. 2" x 4" Blocking • Set bottom of Stationary Panel onto Sill and slide sideways, over Sill Guide toward Stationary Side Jamb. • Place a 2" x 4" wedge into opening to force Stationary Exterior View Panel into Stationary Side Jamb. Use wood blocking at each end of wedge to protect unit. • Check position of Stationary Panel by aligning with scribe mark on Sill. • Drill 1/16" to holes 3/8" deep into Stationary Panel, Stationary using holes in stationary Sill Insert as a guide. Panel • Fasten using Grey #8 X 1" Screws provided. Install Stationary Panel (Frenchwood®, Narroline® or DP Upgrade Perma-Shield® Gliding Doors only) Weight of door panels will vary. Use a reasonable number of people with sufficient strength to lift, move and carry door panels. Always use Parting Stop appropriate lifting techniques. Support Operating Panel in frame at all times until Head Stop is attached in Step 2. Failure to do so could result in the panel falling out causing personal injury, property damage and/or product damage. • From the exterior, lift the Stationary Panel and insert top between Insect Screen Guide and Parting Stop. Insect Screen Stationary • Set bottom of Stationary Panel onto Sill Filler making Channel Panel sure it rests tightly against the Flexible Lip. • Slide Stationary Panel sideways into side jamb pocket until panel is flush with end of Sill Filler and Sill Filler the predrilled holes in panel line up with holes in Exterior View Sill Filler Flange. • For Perma-Shield® Gliding Patio Doors only, Drill 1/16" pilot holes into Stationary Panel through existing Flexible Lip holes into Sill Filler Flange. • Fasten with Gray #8 x 1" Flat Head Screws. Stationary Sill Panel Filler Flange Sill Filler Gray #8 x 1" Flat Head Screws Sill Filler Flange Exterior View 4 5 Panel Assembly and Installation Panel Assembly and Installation 2. Fasten Head Bracket Head Jamb • Align Head Bracket with predrilled holes in head jamb. Fasten Head Bracket to head jamb using Painted #8 x 1" Flat Head Screws. Head Bracket • For Perma-Shield® Patio Doors, drill 1/16" pilot holes through remaining holes into Stationary Panel. Drill Painted #8 x 1" holes approximately 1" deep. Fasten using #8 x 1" Flat Head Screw Colored Flat Head Screw. • For Frenchwood®, Narroline®, and DP Upgrade Perma-Shield® Patio Doors, push Stationary Panel towards the interior until predrilled holes are visible. Fasten Head Bracket to panel using Painted #8 x 1" Flat Head Screws. Stationary • For 4-Panel Patio Doors, repeat steps for second Head Bracket Panel Stationary Panel. Install Stationary Panel Interlock Weatherstrip Silicone • Apply a 1/8" bead of Silicone Sealant, up the vertical Sill Filler Sealant edge of Stationary Panel, starting at the bottom edge of Flange the panel as shown. • 3" Interlock Weatherstrip must contact black Foam Black Foam Plug Plug at top of unit and black Foam Plug on bottom Sill Filler of unit to achieve a weathertight seal. Failure to do Perma-Shield® Gliding Patio Door - Interior View so may result in water infiltration and product or property damage. • Position Stationary Interlock Weatherstrip on the Silicone interior edge of the Stationary Panel as shown. Flexible Lip Sealant Ends of Stationary Interlock Weatherstrip must be in contact with black Foam Plugs located at the Head and Sill. • Hold Stationary Interlock Weatherstrip tight to Stationary Panel edge and drill 1/16", 3/8" deep, Sill Filler into Stationary Panel using Stationary Interlock Flange Weatherstrip as a guide Drill holes approximately 3/8" deep. Frenchwood®, Narroline®, DP Upgrade Perma-Shield® Gliding Patio Doors - Interior View • Fasten weatherstrip to Stationary Panel using Painted #7 x 5/8" Flat Head Screws. • For Perma-Shield® and DP Upgrade Perma-Shield® Gliding Patio Doors, proceed to Step 5. Stationary Panel Interlock Weatherstrip Stationary Panel Interlock Weatherstrip Stationary Panel Interlock Weatherstrip Black Foam Plug #7 x 5/8" Painted Flat Head Screw Stationary Panel Stationary Panel Head - Interior View Black Foam Plug Sill - Interior View 6 7 Panel Assembly and Installation Panel Assembly and Installation 4. Prepare Operating Panel (Frenchwood® and Narroline® Gliding Doors only) Left Hand Panel Right Hand Panel Proper orientation of panels mentioned below in relation to the side jamb is necessary to avoid installation damage. Frenchwood® and Narroline® Gliding Patio Door Operating Panels are universal. They can be used Lock Lock Side Side in either a left or right hand frame. • One side of Operating Panel will be the lock side, the other will be the weatherstrip side. Stand Operating Panel up in front of (not in) opening where it will be installed, exterior side out. Side of door which overlaps or meets side of Stationary Panel, already in place, is the weatherstrip side of the Operating Panel. • Apply two Handle Hole Plugs to handle holes on (Weatherstrip Side) weatherstrip side of Operating Panel. Operating Panel - Exterior View 4-Panel Installations Only Panel profile varies by product line 4-Panel doors will have two Operating Panels. Frenchwood® Patio Door shown. Each has their own weatherstrip side and lock side. 6 7 Panel Assembly and Installation Panel Assembly and Installation 5. Attach Operating Panel Interlock Weatherstrip Weatherstrip Side • Place Operating Panel exterior side up on a clean flat work surface. • Apply a 1/8" bead of Silicone Sealant 3" up vertical edge of panel and 1/2" across bottom edge of panel, opposite side of handle holes as shown. • Position Operating Panel Interlock Weatherstrip on the Handle exterior edge of Operating Panel, opposite the side with Holes handle holes and flush with the bottom edge of door. • Hold Operating Panel Interlock Weatherstrip firmly Handle in place and drill 1/16" holes, 3/8" deep, through Holes Right prepunched holes into Operating Panel. Operating Panel • Fasten Operating Panel Interlock Weatherstrip with Painted #7 x 5/8" Pan Head Screws provided. Left Operating Exterior Edge Panel Exterior Edge Panel profile varies by product line - Perma-Shield® Patio Door shown. Operating Panel Interlock Weatherstrip Painted #7 x 5/8" Operating Panel Pan Head Screw Interlock Weatherstrip Bottom Edge of Exterior Edge Interlock Weatherstrip Flush with Bottom Edge of Operating Panel • 1/2" • Silicone Sealant • 3" • Top Edge Operating Panel Interlock Weatherstrip 8 9 Panel Assembly and Installation Panel Assembly and Installation 6. Remove Inside Head Stop Inside • Remove the (2) screws holding Inside Head Stop to Head Jamb Head Stop the Head Jamb. Save screws for reinstallation of Inside Head Stop. Screw Interior View Panel profile varies by product line Frenchwood® Patio Door shown. 7. Install Operating Panel Weight of door panels will vary. Use a reasonable number of people with sufficient strength to lift, move and carry door panels. Always use appropriate lifting techniques. Operating Panel Support Operating Panel in frame at all times until Head Stop is attached in Step 8. Failure to do so could result in the panel falling out causing personal injury, property damage and/or product damage. • Lift the Operating Panel into the frame from the interior and position the Rollers on top of the Sill Rib. Tip the Sill Rib top of the Operating Panel in, slide panel closed, and hold in position until Inside Head Stop is reattached. 4-Panel Door Installations Install second Operating Panel immediately after Interior View first. Operating Active Panels will need to be held in place until Inside Head Stop is reattached. Reattach Inside Head Stop Head Jamb • Position the Inside Head Stop on the Head Jamb. For Head Stop Frenchwood® and Narroline® Patio Doors, make sure wood surface faces interior. • Fasten Head Stop with the (2) previously removed screws, returning them to the same holes they were removed from. DO NOT overtighten screws. • Drill 1/16" holes through remaining hole locations and fasten using #8 x 1-1/2" Screws provided. Adjust Panel, Lock and Latch if Required • Slide Operating Panel open until a narrow gap exists between Operating Panel and Side Jamb. The narrow gap should be equal from top to bottom. Equal Gap between • If gap is not equal, remove the (2) Threaded Caps panel and located on Bottom Rail of Operating Panel using a Door Side Jamb large flat head screwdriver. • Adjust rollers by inserting a screwdriver into Up Adjusting Sockets. Turn clockwise to raise panel or counterclockwise to lower panel until gap is equal full length. • Replace caps when adjustment is complete. Down For 4-Panel Door Installations The Panel Astragal can now be applied. Refer to 4-Panel Astragal Installation Guide #0004195 Adjusting furnished with Panel Astragal package. Sockets This step completes the installation of the Interior View Perma-Shield® and DP Upgrade Perma-Shield® Gliding Patio Door.
