OUPCORRECTEDAUTOPAGEPROOFS–FINAL,29/11/2021,SPi OUPCORRECTEDAUTOPAGEPROOFS–FINAL,29/11/2021,SPi Acknowledgements Thisbook, whichstemsfromthoughtsthathavebeenpreoccupyingtheeditorfor over two decades, began to take form ahead of the centennial of the 1918–19 influenza pandemic with the support of a grant from the Israel Science Foundation for the project ‘Forgetting and Remembering the Great Flu: Laying the Foundations for a Global-Transnational History of Cultural Amnesia and Rediscovery’ (ISF 1150/17). A grant from the Fritz Thyssen Stiftung made it possible to convene an international conference/workshop on ‘Cultural Histories oftheGreatFluPandemicof1918–1919:RepresentationsandMemories’(February 2019)andafollow-upworkshopon‘Forgetting,RememberingandRediscovering theGreatFlu’(December2019).BothoftheseeventswereheldattheHumanities ResearchCentre(ForschungszentrumHistorischeGeisteswissenschaften)ofGoethe UniversityFrankfurt, withthesupportoftheformerdirectorDr SteffenBruendel and the assistance of the centre’s staff Janneke Rauscher and Monika Beck. The participants in these stimulating intellectual gatherings found it somewhat fitting that we were discussing historical amnesia on a campus with a memorial for Dr AloisAlzheimer. Whilst the project commenced before the outbreak of COVID-19, writing about a global pandemic during a global pandemic proved to be particularly challenging, and I am thankful to the contributors for producing their chapters despite difficult conditions (and can only regret the loss of contributions by authors who had to withdraw because of unforeseen hardships). Research stu- dents from Ben-Gurion University of the Negev who assisted include Valery Cordoval, Alex Salnikov and Karina Yankovich, as well as the postdoctoral researcher Dr Cynthia Gabbay. Special thanks are due to Matan Vardi for his valuable help with the editorial process. Stephanie Ireland at Oxford University Press expressed initial interest in early 2019 and Cathryn Steele, with character- isticperspicacity, realisedtheimportanceofthisbookjustbeforethecoronavirus maelstrom and made sure to see the project through to its fruition. Vaishnavi Anantha Subramanyam skilfully managed the book’s production, in spite of a raging pandemic. Whereas interest in the topic was limited for many years, the COVID-19 crisis has pressed home the importance of understanding how epidemicsareremembered, forgottenandultimatelyrediscovered.
