Eric Dietz David R. Black This book focuses on innovations and new ways to address catastrophic problems. This does not mean the old methods should be eliminated or abandoned, but carefully reviewed for efficient mitigation of the problem. The methods described are based on research and experience attained from university research and Pandemic Influenza grant in 2008, Engineering the Degradation of Healthcare Systems in Pandemic Influenza, and 2009, Pandemic Influenza Exercise Preparedness Program: An Extended Analysis of the 2008 Pan Flu Tabletop and Functional Exercise Program that were awarded to Purdue University. It is important to recognize that the methods described are not a panacea for a pandemic. The information provided is a foundation upon which individuals and organizations can build. The intention of the book is for readers to use the information given to enhance practical responses of emergency response.
