I also became aware that the year had also brought a few more grey hairs, but with each came a new experience and opportunity. As you can see from my picture I’ve been presented with quite a Mike Lowman s few opportunities over my life time. I wanted to share with you my insight on some of those opportunities; President HBA of South Carolina ’ • My backyard – When I was the President of the HBA of Greater Columbia I was cognizant of the need to protect our backyard from undue and needless regulation and bureaucracy. What I t have found as your state president is that not only is the backyard bigger it is also ripe to be overgrown and n strangle our industry. Our local and state HBA staffs work tirelessly and with great success to keep our yard clear of the risks to homeownership and our industry. I’ve witnessed firsthand the value my membership has on our industry and e my profession. • Unity – If a group is willing to stand up for what they believe then conflict is sure to follow. Many times that conflict is d targeted toward outside special interest groups trying to attack homeownership (ie. mandated residential fire sprinklers) i and at times conflict comes between friends and neighbors. This year we have had a mix of both. This year has made it clearer to me that I believe, more than ever, that our industry needs to work as a whole to continue to work our way s through the current economic times. One person, nor one group or association, can hope to succeed without all of us pulling together and working for the betterment of our industry, association and members. Without unity we weaken e the entire industry. r • Rally – Our HBA has remained strong and viable and the industry will rally because of it. I ask each of you to continue to rally for our association and industry. In fact, the HBA will sponsor a “Rally for Homeownership” in January at P the S.C. statehouse. I hope our entire membership will attend and bring the importance of home ownership and our Continued on page 9 BUILD THE COOLEST HOUSES WITH SOLARBORD RADIANT BARRIER SHEATHING Send radiant heat back where it came from Make it the crowning achievement of every build As temperatures and cooling costs soar, the new frontier in Solarbord, SFI CoC certified, installs like any roof sheathing house construction is increasing energy efficiency.
