Palliative Care Nursing Q uality Care to the End of Life M arianne Matzo, PhD, GNP-BC, FPCN, FAAN, is Professor and Frances E. and A. Earl Ziegler Chair in Palliative Care Nursing at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center College of Nursing in Oklahoma City. She also is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Geriatric Medicine, the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine; a member of the Doctoral Faculty at the Union Institute and University, Cincinnati, Ohio; and a Soros Scholar for the Project on Death in America. She was awarded a doctorate in Gerontology from the University of Massachu- setts–Boston and a master’s degree in nursing from the Gerontological Nurse Practitioner program at the University of Massachusetts–Lowell. Her funded research explores issues of sexual health promotion and assessment in patients receiving hospice and palliative care. Dr. Matzo has presented educational programs regionally, nationally, and internationally on many topics related to care of the dying person, gerontological nursing, and curriculum devel- opment. She has authored four books, including two published by Springer Publishing, 23 book chapters, and 42 peer-reviewed publications. Deborah Witt Sherman, PhD, APRN, ANP-BC, ACHPN, FAAN, is Professor and Assistant Dean of Research at the University of Maryland School of Nursing and Assistant Director of the Developing Center for Excellence in Palliative Care Research. Dr. Sherman is also a member of the Palliative Care Consultation Service at the University of Maryland Medical Center. In 2009, Dr. Sherman received the Hospice and Palliative Care Nurses Association’s “Leading the Way Award,” which recognizes her implementation of the fi rst Palliative Care Nurse Practitioner Program in the United States. Dr. Sherman also serves as faculty of Tenshi College in Hakkaido, Japan, where she implemented Japan’s fi rst Palliative Care Masters Program in Nursing. Dr. Sherman’s education includes a BSN from Mount Saint Mary’s College, Newburgh, New York; a master’s degree from Pace University, Tarrytown, New York; a doctoral degree in nursing from New York University, and a post-master’s certifi cate in adult health from New York University. She was awarded the Prestigious Project on Death in America Faculty Scholars Fellowship, funded by the Soros Foundation. Dr. Sherman served for seven years as the co-director of the Bronx VA Medical Center Interprofessional Palliative Care Fellowship Program. Dr. Sherman received a Post-Doctoral AIDS Research Fellowship Award from the Aaron Diamond Foundation and has had two studies funded by the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Sherman has been faculty for the End of Life Nurs- ing Education Consortium (ELNEC), and served as a member of the steering committee in developing the National Consensus Guidelines for Quality Palliative Care. She is a member of several nursing and palliative care editorial boards and has published numerous data-based and other scholarly articles and books related to palliative care.
