It will also be a useful source of reference for any person who may be in the process of decorating their properties. It contains not just trade information but includes technical infor- mation that considers the actions required before, during and after the decoration has taken place. A knowledge of surfaces is required to determine the preparation required. An awareness of tools and materials is required to enable selection for the implementation of the decorating tasks. Without prejudice I believe the content to be correct and this content will help the reader to progress to a technical certificate and eventually a NVQ award once site experience has been gained. The level of the book is at NVQ2 but there are parts that include L3 information and that will be useful at a later time. I have not included specialist information on optional units such as spraying or application of decorative plasterwork, nor have I linked the chapters to units and elements of NVQ frameworks. This book mirrors to some extent a publication produced by the construction industry training board, which is a manual of teaching and learning material for prospective colleges and training agencies delivering painting and decorating programmes, to use and adapt as they wish. However not all people can attend a training programme whilst working, so enclosed throughout the book are working sections where you can test your knowledge and understanding, and collect information to use as evidence in gaining a NVQ award or technical certificate. My thanks go to all the people and organisations I have worked with over the years whose own contributions have added to my own in assembling such knowledge that I hope are in chunks of comprehensi- ble learning material. Lists and tasks: The painting and decorating of a task is not the only thing to take Introduction into consideration; in many instances the area to be decorated has to be assessed to determine if the proposed decoration can be carried out. It may be necessary to carry out some remedial work such as the replacing of damaged cornice, the repair of mouldings or the replace- ment of sections of skirting. To this end the decorator is required to carry out this work as other tradespersons will not give up their time for such a small task. To carry out such tasks requires the decorator to have available a comprehensive service and maintenance tool kit in addition to the painter and decorator tool kit. 1.1.1 Hand tools Tools and Equipment are used for the preparation of: (cid:2) surfaces and materials (cid:2) the application of materials. Preparation tasks include the: (cid:2) removal of paint coatings, varnishes and lacquers (cid:2) removal of surface contaminants (cid:2) removal of wall coverings (cid:2) making good of surfaces by using fillers and stoppers (cid:2) abrading of surfaces before the application of products (cid:2) preparation of materials for use in application to surface areas.
