Although his life was turned upside down, Eric never lost his love for learning nor his enormous sense of service to his neighbour. A year after his injury, Eric returned to finish high school and in 2010 completed his bachelor’s degree in computer engineering. He will be commencing graduate school in the fall of 2010. Over the last 5 years, Eric has devoted his energies to augmenting possibilities for children and youth with disabilities, by applying his superior software engineering skills and know-how to develop virtual reality therapy applications, assistive technologies, and embedded systems for paediatric rehabilitation. He is an inspirational example of the defiant power of the human spirit and a testimony to the engineering of possibilities from disability. © 2011 by Taylor & Francis Group, LLC © 2011 by Taylor & Francis Group, LLC Contents Acknowledgements ...................................................................................................ix Contributors ..............................................................................................................xi Chapter 1 Introduction ..........................................................................................1 Tom Chau and Jillian Fairley Chapter 2 Microswitch-Based Programs for Children and Youth with Multiple Disabilities: An Overview of the Responses and Technology Adopted ..........................................................................13 Giulio E. It has been both an educational and an immensely rewarding journey. This work would not have been possible without the tremendous editorial assistance of Tasnim Kamani, who spent countless hours formatting references, retrieving information for incomplete references, tracking different versions of manuscript files for the various chapters, and coordinat- ing timely communications with the contributing authors. We are also grateful for the efforts of Xiao Jin Chen, who helped to distribute initial materials and instructions to the authors and collect signed agreements. We would also like to acknowledge the graphic and visualization creativity of Steven Bernstein, who collaborated with the various authors to develop the chapter roadmaps. ix © 2011 by Taylor & Francis Group, LLC © 2011 by Taylor & Francis Group, LLC
