It comes after Oxford East MP Andrew Smith and Save Oxford Stadium chairman Tan Sawyer presented apetition with over 2,000 signatures to save the stadium to council leaders Bob Price and Ed Turner last week. Mr Smith said: “There is over- ‘whelming opposition, both from local residents and stadium sup- porters across the counly,to this. * Andrew Smith MP and lan Sawyer (right) present the petition to Cllrs Bob Price and Ed Turner planning application, “People really value the sta- dium activities and facilities and want to see it fully re-open. “There is huge public support for getting back speedway and greyhound racing as well as Keeping the dance, karting and other activities on site. “This is avital facility, notjust for Oxford but the whole county, and we are determined to save it. ‘It is good news that there is serious business interestin buy- ing the site and operating it as stadium,” Oxford Stadium has been closed as a greyhound track since December 29, 2012, with speedway not having been run at the site since 2008, This proposal was for 220 resi- dential units to be built on the site, but a council report rec- ommended refusal on the basis that community facilities would be lost. It was also concerned about the lack of the full provision of affordable housing and potenti poor living conditions for future occupants. Cllr Price said: “The city coun- ci’s local plan clearly identifies this site forleisure, and there is hhuge support forthe retention of greyhound and speedway racing in Oxford. “This is together with the other popular activities that are housed in the stadium - dance, karting and motorcycle training all have strong support. “We know that there are sev- eral promoters who are willing totake over the stadium and run it with all these activities. “It is disappointing that the Greyhound Racing Association is failing to promote and develop the sport that it represents,” A spokesperson for Galliard Homes, who put forward the pro posed devel comment further on the matter. Fitness trail ‘is a great new park feature’ ANEW fitness trail has been installed in Cowley Marsh to encourage people to lead healthier and stronger life- styles. The trail has multiple exer- cise stations located at inter- vals so that people can run on grass or paths from machine to machine. ‘A cross trainer, treadmill, stepper, leg, shoulder and chest presses, hand bike, treadmill and parallel bars are just some ofthe workouts available Clr Mark Lygo, board member for Parks, Sport and Events, said: “This Fitness Trailis a great fea- ture for this popular park, pro- viding new opportunities for our city’s residents to take time out of their busy day to take part in exercise out in the fresh air” Meanwhile, a consultation is underway for similar Fitness Trails at South Park and across The Leys.
