Current texts and commentaries either include English translations of the poems or provide extensive literary and textual information without the translation aids required by students at this level. Recently published Ovid readers have been keyed to the secondary school advanced placement test, and they include selections from both the Amores and the Metamorphoses. With this in mind, we have designed a complete reading text of Amores 1 for students who have completed the study of Latin grammar at the elementary level and have had some experience reading extended passages of Latin poetry. The introduction provides an overview of the elegiac genre and Ovid’s career as a poet and a basic discussion of elegiac meter and style. The text of the poems is our own, differing (though not sub- stantially) from other established manuscripts of the Amores, and with very little textual commentary. We include short introductions to acquaint the student with each poem’s subject matter and themes, and, to assist the student further, we offer a comprehensive vocabu- lary at the back. We are well aware that in today’s classrooms Latin students of varying abilities and experience may be enrolled in the same course, and we have tried to address their individual needs. The notes are designed to help students of different levels approach both the lan- guage and the poetry of Ovid with greater understanding.They offer the grammatical and syntactical assistance that a less experienced Latin student would depend on as well as basic background infor- mation. They also provide stylistic commentary and information of a literary and interpretative nature that a more experienced Latin student would welcome. As an additional aid, the notes for each ix
