The best way to learn vocabulary is to do a little revision regularly. That’s what the Outcomes Vocabulary Builder (OVB) will help you with. What each entry contains • After each entry there is a space. Write the translation of the entry in your language. • There is then a list of up to six typical collocations and phrases that the word is used with. • Regular word building boxes give extra information on common verbs, for example: do, make, give and go. capital new word .............................................................. <r space to translate Madrid is the capital of Spain. <r example sentence What's the - of Germany? / <- other examples I'm from the ~ /1 live in the - / the - city How the OVB is organised It is organised to make it quick and easy to use in class and to revise at home. • Each unit in the OVB contains the most important new words from exercises, texts and listenings in the unit of the Student's Book. • The units are then divided according to each double page of the Student’s Book and the words within those pages are written in alphabetical order. • At the end of each unit there are exercises to do. • There is an answer key at the back of the book. Ways you can use the OVB • Read the word list before you study the unit in the book. • Translate all the words you don't know based on the explanation. Check the collocations for each word. Do they make sense? Are any different to your language? • In class, if you have forgotten a word, look it up again. Write out the collocation list and add one of your own. • Cover words in the list and say or write phrases with the word. Then compare with the collocation list. • Choose five to ten words from the list to learn each day. • Put eight new words in a story using the collocations listed. • Do the exercises at the end of each unit sometime after you’ve done it in class. Then check the answers in the key. • Write a list of the words you find difficult to remember and write sentences using the words. 01 middle__________: I live in the middle of the country. / the - of Paris / in the - of the night / my - name need__________: I need some help. /1 ~ a job /1 ~ to learn English /1 ~ a drink /1 don’t ~ it nice__________: Nice to meet you. / it’s a ~ city / some ~ shops /a - hotel /a - beach / a ~ place north__________: I live in the north of Brazil. / in the —east of the country / the —west /1 come from the ~ The opposite is south: it's in South America pair__________: Work in pairs. / repeat the conversation in -s / a ~ of shoes /a - of glasses parents__________: I live with my parents. / where are your -from? / my - are from Casablanca / come and meet my ~ / my - are very nice part__________: Which part of Slovakia are you PEOPLE AND PLACES from? / people from different ~s of the world / the first ~ of the film place__________: Describe the place where you live. / Bern is a very nice - / it’s a great - to live Paces 16-17 say__________: Say the names of everyone in your class. / - that again / how do you - that in English? capital__________: Madrid is the capital of Spain. / / the newspaper ~s the film’s good what’s the - of Germany? / I'm from the - /1 live in sit__________: Come in.
