He and his colleagues there perfected methods of medical educationthatcontinuetobetheworkingmodelmorethanacenturylater.Dr. Hinohara’sbriefchronologyofOsler’scareersuccinctlyepitomizeshisremark- ablelife.Osler’sinfluencespreadrapidlythroughhismanywritings,innovative teaching,andwayoflife.Hismedicaltext,ThePrinciplesandPracticeofMedi- cine (first edition, ), became the standard for the English-speaking world and,throughtranslations,farbeyond.Itwasthisfirsteditionthatinspiredthe creation of the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research. But today it is his nonscientificbooksandarticlesthatcontinuetoberead,enjoyed,ando(cid:12)times toinspire:hismessageisthepracticalartofliving.Oneofhiscardinalmessages istheprimacyofbeinghumane,inone’slifeandone’spatient-centeredmedical practice.Thepractical,everydayutilityofhisinsightandexamplereachesbe- yondthepracticeofmedicineandholdsvalueforallwhoinvestigatehiswords.
