A comprehensive survey of an exciting therapeutic approach by one of its chief developers "ieee lar ee ~ Physilan A erBOOK ABRAM HOFFER, M.D., Ph.D. OMP Dogo Orthomolecular Medicine For Physicians Orthomolecular medicine is in essence the treatment and preven- tion of disease and the promotion of health by adjustment of the chemical constituents of the body, primarily by nutritional manage- ment. It has attracted much atten- tion and aroused much controversy, which it is one purpose of this book to place in perspective. Dr. Hoffer, whose experience in orthomolecular medicine spans nearly forty years—extending back to long before it received its name— here presents its elements mainly for medical practitioners, though the lay reader interested in personal health management will find much of interest. The author makes two important initial points. First, the orthomolecular concept is easily tested. ‘A physi- cian who wishes to become famil- iar with orthomolecular medicine may do so by simply beginning with a sugar-free diet and one or two vitamins. Even with this simple approach, physicians who have used this treatment are so persuaded by the results that they have become orthomolecular phy- sicians. | know of none who, after one year of practice, have reverted to their previous methods” (Continued on back flap) Digitized by the Internet Archive in 2022 with funding from Kahle/Austin Foundation https://archive.org/details/orthomolecularmeOOOOhoft Orthomolecular Medicine OF Physicians Keats Titles of Related Interest 1986: A Year in Nutritional Medicine, edited by Jeffrey Bland, Ph.D. The AIDS Fighters by Ian Brighthope, M.D. with Peter Fitzgerald B6é: The Natural Healer by Alan Gaby, M.D. Brain Allergies by William H. Callbeck and Irwin Kahan, friends and colleagues. Together we explored the usefulness of large doses of niacin and niacinamide in the treatment of schizophrenia, using the first double-blind, controlled study in psychiatry. Jointly we coauthored the first report describing the results of our studies.* And to Dr. Arthur M. Sackler for his foresight in publishing our paper in his journal. And, finally, to all my colleagues and associates in the United States, Canada and Australia, who have added so much to orthomolecular medicine. Without their dedicated work, this book would not have been possible. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I wish to thank Frank Murray for his assistance and enthusiasm in the publishing of this book. Especial thanks go to Frances Fuller for her skill, dedication and industry in preparing this material for publication. *Hoffer, A., Osmond, H., Callbeck, M. J. & Kahan, I. (1957).
