The conference took place at the University ofPecs (Hungary) from the 29th ofAugust to the 2nd ofSeptember, 2005. The organizers, members of the Centre for Patristic Studies, wish to express their thanks for the generous support they have received from the University of Pecs, the Roman-Catholic Episcopate of P6cs, the Municipality ofPecs, and the Hungarian Scientific Research Fund. As it was decided at the meeting in Pisa in 2001, the 2005 meeting would deal with "Origen and the religious practice of his time". This topic offers possibilities to study the various religious traditions that coexisted (and at time clashed) in the second and third century. The conference was attended by some eighty delegates. The present volume includes a broad selection from the papers that have been read. The editors wish to thank the many colleagues who have contributed to this volume. They are also very much indebted to Professor Lorenzo Perrone, the organiser of the Pisa conference, for his suggestions and counsels. Finally, thanks are due to Peeters Publishers of Leuven for their kind support and for accepting this volume in the series ofBETL.
